HISTORY OF LATE MAJ. GEN. MUHAMMADU SANI SAMI(RTD) SAMI GOMO II, THE EMIR OF ZURU
Major General Muhammadu Sani Sami, the Emir of Zuru, was a highly revered leader and retired military officer. He lived a very remarkable life with dedication and service during his military career days and his reign as the emir of Zuru.
Early Life and Education: Born on October 24, 1943, Sami attended Junior Primary School in Zuru, Senior Primary School in Kontagora, and Government College in Bida. He later enrolled in the Nigerian Military Training College.
Military Career: Sami joined the Nigerian Armed Forces in 1962 and was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in 1963, alongside President Muhammadu Buhari. He participated in the Nigerian Civil War and held various positions, including:
Platoon Commander, 3rd Infantry Battalion, Kawo, Kaduna (1963-1966)
Detachment Commande, Kainji Dam Construction (1966) and Mining Operations in Bukuru, Jos (1967)
Brigade Major, 32 Infantry Brigade, Jos (1970-1971)
Commander, 2 Infantry Brigade, Nsukka and Abakaliki (1972-1973)
Governor, Bauchi State (1984-1985) and Acting Governor, Sokoto State
Reign as Emir: Sami ascended to the throne as the 11th Emir of Zuru in 1995 and worked tirelessly to promote peace, development, and unity in his domain.
He fostered Interfaith Dialogue, creating an inter-denominational committee comprising Muslims and Christians
Improved Security, reintroducing the colonial system of security measures and setting up security committees at various levels
Promoted Development, attracting investors and supporting initiatives like the Federal University of Agriculture, Zuru
Legacy: Emir Sami passed away on August 16, 2025, at the age of 81, in a London hospital. He is survived by four wives and seven children. The entire Leadership of ZEYA has extended condolences to his family and the people of Zuru Emirate
