Jambutu and Doubelli are ready to turn their plastic problem into wealth.

On 29th August, our team sat down with residents of these two communities for a conversation that's been a long time coming. Working alongside the Adamawa State Environmental Protection Agency (ASEPA), under the UNDP/SGF/GEF-supported project "Re-imagining Nigeria's Plastic Crisis through Grassroots Innovation," we talked plainly about something everyone already sees but few have the means to solve: the plastic piling up in gutters, along footpaths, near the water people rely on.

We didn't come with just a warning, though. We came with a plan.

RATEI is setting up plastic collection hubs in the area, places where waste can actually become income, especially for young people, women, and persons with disabilities who are too often left out when new opportunities show up. ASEPA reminded everyone that clean streets don't happen from government action alone; they happen when communities show up for the monthly sanitation exercises too. And the room agreed. People pledged to be part of it, not just to watch it happen.

It's easy to overlook how much a blocked drain or a plastic-choked stream costs a community until flood season hits, or until someone falls ill from contaminated water. In a region already carrying the weight of conflict and climate stress, we don't have room to treat plastic waste as someone else's problem. It's tied to health, to farmland, to whether a family has to rebuild their home again next rainy season.

What we saw in Jambutu and Doubelli is what durable solutions actually look like on the ground, not a slogan, but neighbours deciding together that their environment and their livelihoods are worth investing in.

“What can we do differently?” Our answer is simple:

Let's collect it, Let's recover it, Let's create value from it, Let's create opportunities from it.
And let's keep our communities clean while doing it.

The plastic crisis is global, but solutions must also start locally.

Adamawa is cleaner when we all show up for it. We're grateful to ASEPA and to the residents of Jambutu and Doubelli for showing up.

RATEI at the Positive Masculinity Training

Rural Agricultural Transformation Empowerment Initiative (RATEI) was privileged to participate in the Positive Masculinity Training, represented by one of our own, Halley Cromwell.

The four-day training provided valuable insights into positive masculinity, gender equality, GBV, FGM, harmful gender norms and youth advocacy. Halley also had the opportunity to serve as a Group Lead and present one of the group assignments.

The experience strengthened our commitment to challenging harmful norms and promoting safer, more inclusive communities.

Special appreciation to UNFPA and the Ministry of Women Affairs for this impactful learning opportunity.

🌍 WORLD HUMANITARIAN DAY 2026 | ACT FOR HUMANITY 🤝❤️

Somewhere in the world, a family has been forced to leave home.

Somewhere, a child is growing up displaced, holding onto memories of a place they can no longer call home.

Somewhere, a woman is rebuilding a life she never chose to lose.

And somewhere in the middle of it all, a humanitarian keeps showing up.

Humanitarian needs are growing, while funding is shrinking. The challenges are becoming harder, but we continue to stand tall for humanity—because humanitarianism is more than funding.

🕊️ We remember those who lost their lives serving humanity.
🤝 We stand with those who continue to serve.
❤️ We stand with every person forced from home and every community struggling to rebuild.

Today, we honour those who stand with people affected by conflict, displacement, hunger, disasters, and forgotten crises.

Because humanity is not just about what we feel.
It is about what we do.

🌍 Happy World Humanitarian Day 2026.

ACT FOR HUMANITY.
