Meet Professor Karuti Kanyinga, the keynote speaker for the 2026 Goodluck Jonathan Foundation Democracy Dialogue.
He will set the stage for this year's Dialogue with a keynote address on our theme: Beyond Elections: Can Political Parties and the Judiciary Save African Democracy?

Professor Karuti Kanyinga is one of Africa's foremost scholars of governance, democracy, and public policy. He is a Research Professor at the Institute for Development Studies (IDS), University of Nairobi. He also serves as a Board Member of the African Leadership Centre (ALC), King's College London, contributing to the Centre's mission of advancing leadership, peace, security, and governance across Africa.

Over more than three decades, Professor Kanyinga has collaborated with leading regional and international institutions, including the African Union (AU), the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the African Peer Review Mechanism (APRM), the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA), and the Open Society Foundations, contributing to research and policy initiatives that have strengthened democratic governance, political institutions, constitutionalism, and state-building across the continent. His scholarship has informed public policy, enriched academic discourse, and shaped governance conversations across Africa.

African Leaders To Attend Goodluck Jonathan Foundation Democracy Dialogue

The Goodluck Jonathan Foundation is ready to host the 2026 edition of its flagship Democracy Dialogue which will take place on Tuesday, the 11th of August 2026, at the International Conference Centre, Bauchi State, Northern, Nigeria.

The dialogue will examine the role of political parties and the judiciary in safeguarding democracy across Africa.

According to a statement issued by the Goodluck Jonathan Foundation (GJF) Foundation’s Communications Officer, Mr. Wealth Dickson Ominabo, the Dialogue is themed ‘Beyond Elections‘: Can Political Parties and the Judiciary Save African Democracy?’.

Meet Hon. Justice Amina Augie, CFR, JSC (Rtd.), one of the distinguished panellists at the 2026 Goodluck Jonathan Foundation Democracy Dialogue.

Hon. Justice Amina Augie, CFR, JSC (Rtd.) is a retired Justice of The Supreme court of Nigeria, whose judicial career spans more than four decades of distinguished service. She served in various judicial capacities, including as Presiding Justice of several Divisions of the Court of Appeal, before her elevation to the Supreme Court of Nigeria, where she served from 2016 until her retirement in 2023.

Beyond the Bench, Justice Augie is an accomplished scholar, mentor, and advocate for justice. She has authored numerous works on human rights, women's rights, and child protection, and has spoken extensively on legal reforms, financial crimes, electoral disputes, and Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR). Her contributions have helped shape legal thought and inspired generations of legal practitioners across Nigeria.

Justice Augie is widely respected for her integrity, profound legal scholarship, and unwavering commitment to justice. She currently serves as the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council of WIGWE UNIVERSITY, Isiokpo, Rivers State.

Her perspectives on constitutionalism, judicial independence, electoral justice, and the rule of law will enrich a timely continental conversation on strengthening democratic institutions beyond the ballot.

For five editions, the Goodluck Jonathan Foundation Democracy Dialogue has provided a platform for thoughtful reflection on the opportunities and challenges shaping democracy across Africa. This year, the conversation continues as we explore the role of political parties and the judiciary in strengthening democratic governance.
