Tungbo-Ijaw born (Tungbo is in Sagbama Local Government of Bayelsa State) Navy Vice Admiral Nelson Bossman Soroh is the first Black African to Sail a Ship from Europe to Africa; First Nigerian to serve in the Royal Navy as an Officer; First Black African to command Warships (a feat he accomplished during the Nigerian civil war when he conducted amphibious assault on Biafran troops in Bonny in July 1967 which helped liberate the bonny kingdom from Biafran soldiers) He was the Nigerian Navy's Chief of Naval Staff between 1973-1975.

The Nigerian Navy's NNS Soroh base in Bayelsa State is named in honour of Admiral Nelson Bossman Soroh, a trailblazing naval officer from the Ijaw community.
His remarkable achievements include:
- First black African to sail a ship from Europe to Africa
- First black African to command warships
- First Nigerian to serve as an officer in the British Royal Navy
- Key figure in liberating the Ibani-Ijaw people of Bonny from Biafran soldiers during the Nigerian Civil War (1967)
Admiral Soroh's bravery and leadership are celebrated through his legacy, and his service as Chief of Naval Staff (1973-1975) remains an inspiration to many.
The NNS Soroh base serves as a testament to his contributions to the Nigerian Navy and the country.

Today, I defied the rains to inspect a number of our ongoing developmental projects across the State.

In the company of the Leader of the State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Monday Bubou Obolo, Honourable Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure, Moses Teibowei, and others, I visited Angiama community to see the progress of work on the 630 metres long bridge across the River Nun taking us to Oporoma town, headquarters of Southern Ijaw Local Government Area and Otuan community. I equally drove on the asphalted sections of the roads to Oporoma and Otuan communities.

Other projects visited were the ongoing Angiama-Eniwari road, the Polaku-Sabagreia road/bridge, the new 25,000 capacity stadium in Igbogene, GloryDrive Phase 3, Imgbi link bridge, the iconic 9-Storey Secretariat, and the road linking the New Yenagoa City to the Amassoma-Airport road.

I am impressed with progress of work so far, trusting that our various contractors will deliver their respective projects on schedule for the use of the good people of the state.
