What happened in Ozoro is not culture. It is violence.
We must stop disguising harm against women and girls as tradition or normalizing abuse in the name of culture.

Women and girls deserve to exist in safety, dignity, and freedom, in every space and at all times.
Silence only protects perpetrators, and we refuse to be silent.

08/03/2026

Today we celebrate the strength, resilience, and achievements of women everywhere.
This International Women’s Day, we reaffirm our commitment to Rights. Justice. Action. For ALL Women and Girls. Let’s continue to stand together for equality, dignity, and a future where every woman and girl can thrive.

According to estimates made by the World Health Organization (WHO), one in three women worldwide have experienced physical or sexual abuse from intimate relationships or from non- partners at some point in their lives.

Studies also show that digital VAWG affects between 16% to 58% of women globally.
Combating gender- based violence requires political commitment, the implementation of laws that promote gender equality, investment in women's organizations, and the addressing of the various forms of discrimination that women face on a daily basis.

Violence against women and girls is not inevitable, it is preventable!

According to the United Nations, a woman is killed every 10 minutes somewhere in the world. Africa continues to bear the heaviest burden, recording 21,700 intimate partner and family-related femicide deaths in 2023.

In Nigeria, where femicide is frequently under-reported or dismissed, at least 401 women died from SGBV in 2022, and 149 more lost their lives to femicide in 2024 (DOHS Femicide Dashboard).

Silence enables violence. Speak up. Demand accountability. End femicide now.

Domestic violence is not a private family issue, it is a serious violation of human rights. Every woman and girl deserves safety, dignity, and respect in her own home. It is time to speak up, take action, and put an end to domestic violence.

International Human Rights Day reminds us that justice, equality, and safety are not privileges, they are rights.

As we conclude the 16 Days of Activism, let us remember that activism must go beyond these two weeks.
Every conversation, every act of support, and every step we take after today brings us closer to a world where the rights of women, girls, and all vulnerable persons are truly upheld.

Gender Advocacy and Women Resource Centre and Odi Community, Bayelsa State , in commemoration of the 16 Days of Activism Against GBV, held a football match to KICK OUT Digital Violence Against Women and Girls.

Women, men, and young people from the community came out in their numbers to show their support, stand in solidarity, and lend their voices to the fight against digital violence.

We are using every platform including sports to spark conversations about safety, digital rights, and the urgent need to end online abuse against women and girls.

Together with the community, we are raising our voices, raising awareness, and raising champions for safer digital spaces.

On 6th December 2025, GAWRC took the 16 Days of Activism campaign to Orhomarho Community, Uvwie LGA, Delta State, hosting an impactful town hall meeting to deepen conversations around gender-based violence, digital violence, and harmful cultural practices.

Members of the community participated actively, sharing experiences and discussing how these forms of violence affect families, communities, and the future of young people.
The engaging session helped participants ask questions, learn reporting pathways, and explore practical ways to support survivors.

The event concluded with a peaceful awareness march around the community, with residents holding placards and boldly calling for an end to GBV in all its forms.

Together, we are building stronger, safer communities through dialogue, awareness, and collective action.
