Gender Advocacy And Women Resource Center An advocacy-oriented NGO promoting the rights of women, children and young persons in Nigeria.

WHO WE ARE

• Gender Advocacy and Women Resource Centre (GAWRC), a non-for-profit-making, women-headed women’s rights organization established in 2019, is based in Nigeria.

• GAWRC has through its executives worked with both governmental and non-governmental agencies in achieving its primary objectives. It has continued to impact the wider justice sector through research projects, advocacy work,

legislative reform and intellectual support services to various justice sector bodies. WHAT WE DO

With transparency and accountability, we engage effective and efficient tools of research, advocacy, legislative reforms, community projects/support, data management, strong partnerships and networks, towards achieving the following objectives:

• Engage community, national and international stakeholders on rights of women, young persons and children in Nigeria.

• Promote and advocate for protection of rights of women, young people and children.

• Create awareness on gender issues, human rights and equality.

• Provide repository and resources for research, training and development.

• Support safe homes and advocate for better choices for abused women, young persons and children.

• Promote peace and conflict resolution as a tool for social and economic development.

• Develop curricula for law, gender studies and other contemporary areas as well as undertake researches and disseminate publications.

• Promote legislative reform and intellectual support services to various justice sector bodies.

• Engage in research, promotion and training for transformational leadership and governance in Africa.

Gender Advocacy and Women Resource Centre (GAWRC) engaged the women’s group in Alaka Community, Delta state, in a community conversation focused on addressing gender-based violence and harmful traditional practices.

The meeting was attended by community leaders, including High Chief Above Hope Erute, Second-in-Command to the Unuevworo; Chief Austin Ukuwrere; Chief Goft Apene; Chief Tony Erute; and Chief Jerry Okwome, whose presence emphasized the community’s commitment to addressing GBV and protecting the rights of women and girls.

These are a few highlights from Gender Advocacy and Women Resource Centre’s (GAWRC) community town hall meeting held with the men,women and youths in Oyobu community, with HRH Ebiegberi Aphaus Temekitin(Oyobu Owei IV), and other community leaders facilitating the community meeting on GBV prevention.

The meeting focused on addressing the identified issues of GBV and harmful traditional practices in the community such as denial of inheritance rights for women and girls, female ge***al mutilation,rape,wife beating, underreporting of gbv, widowhood rites etc.

These statistics represent ONLY reported cases. In Nigeria today, sexual violence remains seriously underreported, as many survivors are unable to come forward due to fear, stigma, victim-blaming, and other barriers.

Recently, we have continued to see heartbreaking reports of sexual violence against women and girls across the media. This must come to an end. Every woman and girl has the right to safety, dignity, and bodily autonomy.

No means no. If she does not give consent, it is sexual abuse. If she withdraws consent at any point and the act continues, it is sexual abuse. If she is intoxicated, unconscious, or unable to give informed consent, it is sexual abuse. If she is underage, it is sexual abuse because a minor cannot legally give consent.

RESPECT CONSENT. SAY NO TO SEXUAL VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN AND GIRLS.

We have seen it too many times how survivors who find the courage to speak out are met with blame, doubt, or judgment. Instead of receiving support, they are bullied into silence.

When one survivor is supported, and treated with compassion, it sends a powerful message to other survivors that their voice matters, and they deserve to be heard.

Let us be the reason survivors find the courage to speak up, not the reason they remain silent.

Flashback to Gender Advocacy and Women Resource Centre’s (GAWRC) 3-Day Capacity Building for Traditional Leaders from Bayelsa and Delta States.

Ending gender-based violence requires more than laws, it requires communities where respect, accountability, and protection are championed from the top. Traditional leaders play an important role in shaping attitudes, resolving community issues, and influencing social norms.

By strengthening the capacity of our traditional leaders, we are strengthening the foundation for safer communities where women and girls can live free from violence.

Every day, women and girls are targeted through doxxing, the malicious release of their personal information, private pictures, or intimate pictures without their consent. These acts are not “cruise” or “online drama”, they are forms of abuse/online violence used to humiliate, intimidate, silence, and exert control.

It is time to end the normalization of online violence against women and girls. Everyone deserves the right to privacy, dignity, and safety both offline and online.
