ALEGG Launches Centre L*D-Funded Black Soldier Fly Project to Tackle Feed Costs and Waste in Orogun
The Alliance for Leadership, Equity and Good Governance (ALEGG), with support from the African Centre for Leadership, Strategy & Development (Centre L*D), has launched a community-driven Black Soldier Fly (BSF) pilot project to tackle rising feed costs and organic waste challenges in Orogun, Delta State. The training is scheduled for July 14–17, 2025.
The Orogun Black Soldier Fly (BSF) Pilot Project introduces a climate-smart model where BSF larvae convert organic waste into high-protein animal feed and organic fertilizer. Funded by a ₦500,000 seed grant from Centre L*D, the initiative is led by Foster Akpore, a fellow of the Centre L*D Intersectional Leadership Incubator.
Over 20 participants—youth, women, farmers, and students from the five Orogun subclans (Umusu, Unukpo, Emonu, Imodje, and Ogwa)—will be trained in BSF farming, sustainable animal nutrition, waste conversion, and cooperative development. Demo farms will be set up across the subclans to support eco-friendly agribusiness.
“This is more than farming,” said Akpore. “It’s about equipping our people with climate-smart skills, reducing costs, and creating green jobs that benefit the environment and the economy.”
Technical support is provided by Mr. Olusegun Wuraola, CEO of Grandpa Agro Allied Farms Ltd, a leading voice in insect-based protein farming.
The project targets a 30–60% reduction in feed costs, improved waste management, and the emergence of youth-led green enterprises. It also advances key SDGs, including Zero Hunger, Decent Work, Climate Action, and Responsible Consumption.
With participants mobilized and preparations underway, the Orogun BSF Pilot Project is more than a one-time initiative. It is a scalable model for sustainable agriculture, youth empowerment, and climate resilience, with the potential to transform waste into wealth and inspire a green agribusiness revolution across the Niger Delta.
