Coastal and Marine Areas Development Initiative

Coastal and Marine Areas Development Initiative CMADI is an NGO that promotes environmental sustainability and conservation for peace, unity and eco Advocacy and Training

Knowledge they say is power.

What we do:

Peace Building

At CMADI, we believe that meaningful development can only thrive in a peaceful and conflict-free atmosphere. We work with partners to put in place measures designed to consolidate peaceful relations and strengthen viable political, socio-economic and cultural institutions capable of handling conflict and to strengthen other mechanism that will either create or support

the necessary conditions for sustained peace. Eradication of Poverty

It is only when there is an inclusive growth that economic growth will reduce poverty, improve equality and create jobs in the rural areas. Inclusive growth is also essential for the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). CMADI is committed to make continual improvements in people’s lives, diversifying the economy, providing good choices and creating opportunities. Our Involvement... CMADI promotes inclusive and sustainable human development and works to reduce poverty in all its dimensions. We focus our efforts on making growth and trade benefit everyone in rural communities. Our projects help to promote women’s businesses by providing micro-credit and entrepreneurship training, provide a coordinated system for mentoring vulnerable youths and preparing them for the future and revive cooperatives to help people make money from their farming activities. The importance of training and advocacy in a society cannot be over-emphasized. Training and advocacy are very vital in any society that aims at progressing by enabling the process of acquiring the essential skills required for a particular job. Capacity Development

CMADI supports capacity development initiatives of governments, civil society organizations, private sector and other institutions through advocacy, training and implementation services. Energy & Environment Conservation

Due to increasing globalization, production and consumption are outpacing the renewal capacity of natural resources and the capacity of governments to manage pollution and wastes. International concern about global climate change is increasing the attention being given to these issues. The impacts of climate change and pollution may be very serious to most communities in the Niger Delta many of which are ill-equipped to deal with the resulting effects on agricultural output, labour productivity, health and internal displacement. The poor are disproportionately affected by environmental degradation and lack of access to clean, affordable energy services. Women's Empowerment

CMADI focuses on gender equality and women’s empowerment because we believe they are a pathway to achieving the Millennium Development Goals and sustainable development.

On April 10th, 2026, our literacy program at Faith Transformation Church, Ugbuwangue, was filled with energy, dreams, and the joy of reading.

Highlights from the day:
- Young Elime opened with a heartfelt prayer, showing incredible confidence.
- Everister B. Omaejalile inspired the children with “My Dream” and encouraged a strong reading culture.
- The kids drew their future dreams – from doctors to pilots!
- Fun learning games: word formation (ages 3–5) and jump & read (ages 6–8).
- Oru Gbubemi Jane distributed storybooks, and Mrs. Erikowa Oritsesanjuya Vervelly taught Good Manners on the Telephone.
- One young boy’s takeaway? “Readers are leaders!”

We ended with refreshments, encouragement, and 57 happy children going home with books and big dreams.

Together with Chasof Foundation - Head Start Library ECD Intervention our early childhood literacy partner are building a generation of leaders through literacy.

Globally, unsafe water, sanitation and hygiene are responsible for the deaths of around 1,000 children under five every day. (WHO, 2023).

156 million girls aged 10–19 still lack access to basic hygiene services globally, compromising their health, dignity, and education. (UNICEF, 2024).

Approximately 43% of global newborn deaths occur in sub-Saharan Africa, where
only half of health care facilities have a water source on site. (WHO/UNICEF, 2023).

Where people lack safe drinking water and sanitation close to home, inequalities flourish, with women and girls bearing the brunt.

They collect water.

They manage water.

They care for people made sick by unsafe water.

They lose time, health, safety, and opportunities.

And too often, the systems that govern water leave women and girls out of decision-making, leadership, funding and representation.

This makes the water crisis a women’s crisis.

We need a transformative, rights-based approach to solving these challenges, where women’s voices are heard and their agency recognized.

All women must be equitably represented at all levels of water leadership – helping design every pipe and policy.

And women must drive change in water as engineers, farmers, scientists, sanitation workers and community leaders.

Clean Water Changes Everything. Will You Help a Family?

Imagine not knowing if the water your family drinks will make them sick. For many families in our coastal communities, this is a daily reality.

That's why we have the Biosand Filter for households in need. This amazing technology is simple, powerful, and built to last for decades!

How does it work?
You just pour in unsafe water, and after it passes through layers of sand and gravel, clean, safe drinking water comes out.

The best part?
1. It removes 99% of harmful bacteria.
2. One filter can serve a family for up to 30 years.
3. It requires no electricity and is easy to use.

But we can't do it alone. We need your help to put these life changing filters in the homes of families who need them most.

A donation big or small helps provide materials, training, and the gift of health to a household.

Let's make a difference, together.

The connection between clean energy, socio-economic development, and environmental sustainability is crucial in addressing issues faced by vulnerable communities worldwide.

Today our Chief Presiding Officer has some thoughts about affordable and clean energy, SDG 7 as we mark the International Day of Clean Energy.

On this International Day of Education, we are happy to see the benefits of co-creating knowledge, skills, and solutions with students from our coastal communities.

They are now seeing education with a different lens which is a brilliant thing as we work towards a sustainable future.

"The power of youth in co-creating education
Youth make up more than half of the global population and are a powerful engine for innovation, social change and sustainable development. Yet many still face persistent barriers that hold them back from shaping the future they want — from poverty and inequality to limited access to quality education and decent work.

Because their lives and opportunities are directly shaped by education, young people must be active partners in reimagining how learning works. As technology continues to transform the world, involving youth in co creating modern, relevant and inclusive education systems is essential to ensure teaching and learning truly meet their aspirations."

We have so much to say but we will leave those for behind the scenes.

Many times national or even state data puts a blanket on the inequalities happening in coastal communities.

For us, improving the lives of coastal residents comes in different forms.

In 2024, we said we'd add 10 work to keep 10 children in school (primary, secondary and higher education). It is to support our continuous work in education.

It's been a wonderful one year. We are grateful to our partners, parents, teachers and the school heads.

As an organisation championing Techno-Entrepreneurship amongst youths, we asked some of our team members how we were accelerating their careers in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM).

Here are the responses 👇🏿

Did we impact your career in any way this year?

We'd love to hear from you.

This year we saw beautiful artworks from young girls in our communities.

With Coastal and Marine Areas Development Initiative 's library, young people were able to use storytelling and art to talk about conservation and other environmental issues in our communities.

This empowerment is not abstract. These art work tie the global to the personal. They remind us that environmental issues are connected to identity, family, and community.

Students are powerful influencers when it comes to handwashing.

In our communities, infrastructure projects often fail after donor departure because:

Broken pumps or units cannot be repaired locally.

Toilets damaged by bad maintenance and human culture are not rebuilt.

The community sees the facilities as external gifts, not their own assets.

This is where shifting from a delivery model to an ownership and change model becomes essential.

We will keep doing WASH in Schools one step at a time.
