Why Are Some Children Living on the Streets?

When we see a child sleeping on the street, begging for food, or wandering around without supervision, it is easy to assume, “This child simply refuses to stay at home.”

But every street child has a story.

Some children run away because of abuse, neglect, violence, hunger, extreme poverty, or harsh treatment at home. Others may have lost their parents, been abandoned, or come from families that can no longer adequately care for them.

Yes, some children may leave home against their parents' wishes because of peer influence, rebellion, or the attraction of street life. But even then, simply blaming the child does not solve the problem.

We must ask deeper questions: What happened to this child? Where is the family? Is the home safe? What support does this child need to return to a stable environment?

At Hosanna David Foundation (HDF), we believe children belong in safe and caring environments not on the streets.

Street children need more than sympathy. They need protection, education, family support, rehabilitation, guidance, and opportunities for a better future.

Instead of judging the child we see on the street, let us help uncover the story behind the child.

Today, we honour the courageous humanitarian workers who dedicate their lives to serving people affected by poverty, conflict, disasters, hunger, and hardship.

At Hosanna David Foundation (HDF), we believe that showing compassion to those in need is an expression of God’s love.

1. Keep a Daily Reading Habit
Encourage 15–30 minutes of reading every day. Let children choose books they enjoy (fiction, comics, or non-fiction). Reading is one of the strongest ways to maintain vocabulary, comprehension, and focus during long breaks.

2. Turn Everyday Activities into Learning
Involve kids in real-life tasks: cooking (math & measurement), shopping (budgeting & addition), gardening (science), or planning a trip (maps & research). These practical experiences reinforce school skills without feeling like formal lessons.

3. Use Short, Fun Educational Activities
Set aside 20–30 minutes a few times a week for light learning — educational apps, puzzles, writing a holiday journal, or simple science experiments. Keep it short and enjoyable so children don’t resist it.
