Gentlemen and Ladies,
As you may be aware, you will agree with me that for over a decade, the rate of kidnapping in south-south Nigeria and the armed conflict in north-east Nigeria between Boko Haram and Nigerian forces has devastated millions of lives. Families have been torn apart, villages and schools destroyed, and more than two million civilians displaced.
Girls and young women have been particularly targeted, used as “wives”, subjected to forced marriages, sexual violence, and years of domestic servitude.
Despite these severe abuses, sufficient steps have not been taken to support their recovery. Instead of providing justice, education, healthcare, and vocational training, many girls have been unlawfully detained in police and military custody with no charges, legal support, or means to challenge their detention.
There is need to reaffirm girls' rights, particularly person with disabilities and empower them, they deserve better.
Many of these girls and young women want to become doctors, teachers, and community leaders. It’s crucial to show them they are not invisible and that their voices matter. Stand with girl survivors in their fight for the future and join them in requesting government support for healthcare, education and livelihood opportunities.
By advocating for their right to education, healthcare, and financial independence, we can help them break the cycle of trauma and reclaim their futures.
