Chief Dore Numa (c. 1860s–1932) rose from a shrewd Itsekiri trader in the mangrove swamps of the Niger Delta to become one of colonial Nigeria’s most powerful figures.
Born into fierce family rivalries, he cleverly aligned with the British during the 1894 war against Nana Olomu, supplying canoes and intelligence that helped defeat his rival. Rewarded with the position of British Political Agent (1895–1914), he later became Paramount Chief of the Warri Division under Lord Lugard in 1917.
Ruling over Itsekiri, Urhobo, and Isoko territories, Dore Numa embodied Indirect Rule — feared, respected, and immensely wealthy.
British officials praised his intelligence, loyalty, and administrative skill until his death in 1932.
A classic story of ambition, strategy, and collaboration in colonial West Africa.
