The grand finale of the 2026 World Malaria Day commemoration marked a defining moment in Enugu State’s fight against malaria, as ECEWS elevated the campaign to new heights.
Held at the International Conference Center, the event convened a vibrant cross-section of society, drawing hundreds of participants from learning institutions, community beneficiaries, development partners, and key stakeholders. United by a shared purpose, attendees gathered to reinforce a collective commitment to ending malaria and advancing public health outcomes across the state.
A major highlight of the event was the announcement of a significant intervention by ECEWS, the provision of health insurance coverage for 1,000 pregnant women in Enugu State. This initiative underscores a strategic shift from malaria control to elimination, aligning with broader efforts led by the Enugu State Government, the Federal Ministry of Health, and global partners such as Jhpiego and World Health Organization Nigeria.
Speaking at the event, the Chief Executive Officer of ECEWS, Dr. Andy Eyo, emphasized the organisation’s commitment to dismantling financial barriers that hinder access to healthcare, particularly for vulnerable populations such as pregnant women. He noted that expanding access to quality care remains central to ECEWS’ mission and a critical step toward achieving malaria elimination.
The event, themed “Driven to End Malaria: Now We Can. Now We Must.”, also witnessed the presence of high-level dignitaries, including the Office of the First Lady of Enugu State, led by Her Excellency, Mrs. Nkechinyere Mbah, the Honorable Commissioner for Health Prof. George Ugwu, alongside partners and stakeholders. Their participation further amplified the urgent call for sustained collaboration, innovation, and action in the collective drive to end malaria.
As the curtains closed on the grand finale, one message stood clear: the path to a malaria-free Enugu is not only possible, it is already in motion, driven by partnerships, commitment, and the resolve to act now.
