Kidnappers of Akwa Ibom NYSC members want N200m after receiving N13 million

According to a report published by Vanguard Newspapers, the kidnappers of eight Akwa Ibom State graduates who were taken hostage in Zamfara State while heading to Sokoto State for the National Youth Service Corps, NYSC, Orientation Camp, have upped their demand to N200 million after receiving N13 million from the relatives of the victims as ransom.

Since they were abducted on August 17, the victims had spent 26 days in the captors' den.

Families who are upset about the situation have begun fasting and praying for their kids.

According to a victim's brother who spoke to Vanguard yesterday under the condition of anonymity, the kidnappers had taken seven members of the corps as well as the bus driver of the Akwa Ibom Transport Company hostage and were keeping them for an additional N200 million in ransom.

The source, said: “We don’t know how we are going to raise that kind of money. Everybody was shocked when two parents, who have been over there since the incident happened told us that after they released the balance of N8 million (to make up N13 million ransom negotiated) they waited for a long for the kidnappers to release our brothers and sisters, but they didn’t.

“They said instead, the kidnappers contacted them to demand N200 million ransom. We have paid N13 million already. First, we paid N5 million, later N8 million to make up the N13 million. Some parents sold their lands, and some even collected loan to raise the N13 million.

“We have not received any help from the government. We found it difficult to raise that N13 million. So, how are we going to raise this fresh ransom of N200 million? We have deliberately kept this development from my mother. I don’t think that poor widow will survive if she hears this. We are suffering and helpless.”

Another relative close to one of the victims’ parents said the victims’ families were particularly worried after being told on Monday that the health conditions of their children were deteriorating as a result of the nature of the place they were being held captive.

The woman who could not hide her anguish, lamented: “In fact all the parents and their family members have resorted to fasting and prayers. Our children in captivity told us to pray for them, that they are very weak.

“As we speak, I just returned from church. We are believing in God to help us bring back our children. God will not fail us. The parents don’t have that kind of money those people are demanding. Where would they get that kind of money?”

It will be recalled that last week, that after the first release of N5 million of the initially negotiated total ransom of N13 million by the families, the abductors gave them up till September 6 to pay the outstanding N8 million.

When the helpless families could not meet the deadline, the captors extended the grace period to September 9, 2023 in response to pleas by parents of the victims asking for more days to enable them raise the outstanding N8 milion.

Meanwhile, the failure of government and security agencies to rescue the victims after three weeks of their abduction continues to generate controversy in Akwa Ibom State.

Some concerned persons in the state have taken to the social media and private radio stations, expressing their anger and disappointment over failure of Federal Government to protect lives and property of its citizens, in this case, the lives of the kidnapped corps members.

When contacted for update on the Akwa Ibom State Police Command’s efforts in collaborating with the Zamfara State’s Command towards rescuing the victims, command’s spokesman, Odiko MacDon, responded: “I’m in a meeting,” and hung up before our reporter could explain further.

Betty Edu: FG to revamp N-Power, include more beneficiaries

Betta Edu, minister of humanitarian affairs and poverty alleviation, says plans are underway to revamp the N-Power scheme to accommodate more beneficiaries and ensure prompt stipend payment.

The N-Power scheme is an initiative aimed at building the skills of youth and promoting entrepreneurship.

In a statement on Sunday in Abuja, the minister said the programme will be relaunched with a ‘renewed hope’ concept.

“We will change the modalities so that people will get their delayed stipends, include more people, and relaunch it with a renewed hope concept,” Rasheed Zubair, special adviser, media and publicity, quoted Edu as saying.

She said the ministry plans to establish humanitarian hubs across the 774 local government areas in the country.

The establishment of the hubs, she said, would be a long-term goal towards eradicating poverty in Nigeria.

She explained that the hubs would accommodate homegrown commodities, which would be sold at cheaper rates to Nigerians.

She said the ministry would send its staff to all the LGAs to get feedback, in addition to engaging in digital tracking of the palliatives.

Edu said the digital tracking of the palliatives is aimed at determining the time, location, household, and individuals they are delivered to.

”This is to ensure transparent and effective disbursement of palliatives; we also plan to bring on board independent monitors to ensure the relief materials reached those in need,” the minister said.

“Under my watch, the ministry will address poverty through Job creation, cash transfer to poor Nigerians.

“We will ensure engagement with the Nutrition Department, the establishment of Micro Small and Medium Enterprise and provision of stimulus to their business.”

She assured Nigerians of her commitment to curtail the humanitarian crisis in Nigeria through a prompt response.

“Nigerians should be rest assured that all existing empowerment schemes within the National Investment Programme will be rejigged to cover more people effectively,” she said.

Edu assured that President Bola Tinubu has huge economic plans for Nigeria to meet Nigerians’ short and long-term needs.

Marketers get foreign investors’ backing for 30,000 gas stations

Oil marketers, on Sunday, confirmed that they have received the nod of domestic and international financiers to develop about 30,000 gas stations nationwide.

It was also gathered that many of the stations were currently being converted to start dispensing gas, following the decision of the Federal Government to deploy about 11,000 vehicles to run on Compressed Natural Gas, as part of plans to cushion the removal of fuel subsidy.

Providing updates on the move by marketers to build about 30,000 gas stations to cushion the effects of fuel subsidy removal, the National President, Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria, Chinedu Okonkwo, told our correspondent that financiers of the project were responding positively.

In April this year, The PUNCH exclusively reported that oil marketers wrote to the Federal Government over their proposal to build about 30,000 gas stations to cushion the effects of subsidy removal on Premium Motor Spirit, popularly called petrol.

In the letter to the Federal Ministry of Finance, the marketer had also asked the Federal Government to make the Central Bank of Nigeria release the N250bn intervention fund for the National Gas Expansion Programme as loans to vehicle owner to acquire gas conversion kit.

“Our partners, Gas Analytics & Solutions Ltd, have an agreement with the independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria to co-locate natural gas dispensers on our network of over 30,000 filling stations in Nigeria.

“This collaboration with IPMAN presents the most economic and expedient platform to deploy the necessary infrastructure to support a fast national roll-out of CNG (Compressed Natural Gas) for vehicles,” IPMAN had explained in its letter.

When contacted on Sunday for updates on the initiative, Okonkwo said IPMAN was working with its financiers and were getting the desired responses for the project.

“The ultimate alternative is the use of gas or CNG, which will reduce the financial burden in fueling a car. So CNG should be encouraged. We are still working with our financiers. Getting money is not a day job, there are things you need to do.

“Our solution is something that will help. A distance that would have taken you between N50,000 to N70,000 when covered using PMS, you are now using N5,000 to cover such distance. So you would have saved over N50,000,” he stated.

Probed further on whether this significant cut in cost was possible when using CNG, Okonkwo replied, “It is very possible. That is why we are bent on deepening this initiative. It is not everybody that can buy PMS. You that with the current cost of PMS, you don’t move anyhow.”

The IPMAN president, however, refused to name the amount being sort by the association from its financiers for the development of the gas stations, stressing that “nobody throws their business plan open like that.”

Asked whether IPMAN was discussing with international or local financiers, Okonkwo replied, “both,” adding that marketers were currently handling the conversion process for the filling stations.

On whether marketers were getting endorsements from their financiers, Okonkwo said, “That’s yes, and we are doing what they have asked us to do.”

The IPMAN president said the government was showing interest in the use of autogas and expressed optimism that marketers would get the support they require from the government.

“They (government) said they will provide about 11,000 vehicles to run on CNG and they have established a presidential committee for that and this means they are thinking about it,” Okonkwo stated.

Peseiro signs contract extension to continue as Super Eagles coach

Jose Peseiro will continue as Nigeria's coach after agreeing to a pay cut, the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) announced Sunday.

The NFF said in a statement that the 63-year-old will now lead Nigeria to the Africa Cup of Nations after his initial one-year contract ran out in July.

His initial contract paid him $70,000 a month, but it is understood the new agreement will have his monthly pay at $50,000 after the federation said they could no longer afford his previous salary.

He has been handed the target of leading the Super Eagles to at least the semi-finals of the Africa Cup to be hosted by the Ivory Coast in January.

The three-time African champions have 12 points from five qualifying matches and have already secured a place at the tournament.

However, they will need at least a point against Sao Tome and Principe next weekend to win their group ahead of second-placed Guinea Bissau, who are on 10 points and play at home to Sierra Leone.

Nigeria has called up several uncapped players including Victor Boniface, Gift Orban, and Jordan Torunarigha for the match.

Boniface has so far netted four goals at new Bundesliga club Bayer Leverkusen, while Orban has hit 26 goals for Belgian club Gent in all competitions since January.

There is also a recall for Portugal-based left-back Bruno Onyemaechi, Tyronne Ebuehi, defensive midfielder Raphael Onyedika, and defender Jamilu Collins, who has returned from a long-term injury
