​Today, 9th September 2026, the leadership, Executive Committee, and entire membership of the Medical Women’s Association of Nigeria, Akwa Ibom State Branch (MWAN-AKS) unite in joyful celebration of an extraordinary leader, a distinguished clinician, and a cornerstone of our secretariat, Dr Ekemini Udi.

​As the Secretary of MWAN-AKS, Dr Udi exemplifies administrative perfection, grace under pressure, and selfless service to the medical profession and humanity.

On the 6th of September 2026, the Medical Women’s Association of Nigeria (MWAN), Akwa Ibom State Branch, joined the leadership of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), Akwa Ibom State Branch, to warmly receive the NMA National President, Dr (Prof.) Afekhide Ernest Omoti, to the Land of Fulfilment.

Standing alongside the State NMA State Officers Committee (SOC) and representatives of other affiliate bodies, our MWAN-AKS President, Dr Mary Udoh, demonstrated strong solidarity and representation to accord the National President a fitting reception.

FROM THE OFFICE OF THE PUBLICITY SECRETARY, MWAN AKWA IBOM STATE BRANCH (MWAN-AKS)

AIM-MNCNH CHAMPIONS IN AKWA IBOM TRAINED TO DRIVE MATERNAL HEALTH INNOVATIONS

Following the successful inauguration of this national project in Akwa Ibom State last year under the leadership of Immediate Past State President ,IPP) Dr Uduak Usanga, the Medical Women’s Association of Nigeria (MWAN), Akwa Ibom State Branch, has successfully hosted a strategic capacity-building and inauguration workshop for AIM-MNCNH Champions in Uyo.
This took place on Thursday, the 3rd of September, 2026.

The Advocacy and Implementation of Maternal, Newborn, Child, Nutrition, and Health (AIM-MNCNH) project, a National Maternal and Child Health Committee project of MWAN is proudly sponsored by the Centre for Communication and Social Impact (CCSI), Pathfinder International, and the Africa Centre of Excellence for Population Health and Policy (ACEPHAP).

The initiative spans 16 states across Nigeria to accelerate the adoption of high-impact, lifesaving maternal and child health interventions.

Key Highlights of the Workshop:
• Cross-Sectoral Collaboration: Champions were selected across media, civil society, religious institutions, and community leadership to extend health advocacy beyond clinical settings into local communities.

• Leadership Drive: MWAN-AKS State President, Dr Mary Udoh, emphasized the urgent need to address Nigeria's disproportionately high maternal mortality burden (accounting for ~28.5% of global maternal deaths in 2020) through evidence-based interventions for Postpartum Haemorrhage (PPH).

• Sustained Momentum: IPP Dr Uduak Usanga commended the multi-partner investment in advocacy, charging the newly inaugurated champions to serve as vital bridges for timely health interventions.

• Expert Technical Sessions: Participants received specialized training in Social and Behaviour Change Communication (SBCC) led by Mr Oluyemi Abodunrin (CCSI) and Smart Advocacy frameworks led by Dr Olufemi Ibitoye (Pathfinder International).

• Clinical Focus (E-MOTIVE Bundle): The training emphasized the E-MOTIVE approach for early detection and rapid management of PPH using:
◦ Early PPH detection
◦ Massage (uterine)
◦ Oxytocic drugs
◦ Tranexamic acid
◦ Intravenous fluids
◦ Vaginal examination & Escalation of care

The workshop concluded with participants developing actionable community roadmap strategies to drive health-seeking behaviour, strengthen local demand for healthcare, and save the lives of mothers and children across Akwa Ibom State.

CULMINATING TWO WEEKS OF IMPACT WITH A GOLDEN AWARD! 🏆
What an incredible finish to an extraordinary outreach!

Following two intense weeks of the Ibom Opem Maternity(IOM) Medical Missions reaching 36,477 women and infants across 20 Local Government Areas, MWAN-AKS was honoured at the grand finale dinner at Ibom Hall!

The IOM Distinguished Champion Award was presented by the CareLife Foundation (convener of the IOM Project) in recognition of our outstanding contributions toward strengthening maternal and infant health outcomes in Akwa Ibom State! 🎖️

Highlights of the Mission:
• 🏥 Massive Community Reach: Provided free antenatal/postnatal care, medical consultations, and maternal health literacy to thousands.
• 👶 Breastfeeding Advocacy: Promoted optimal infant nutrition, including recognizing mothers practicing exclusive breastfeeding as World Breastfeeding Week activities concluded.

• 🤝 Strong Partnerships: Proud to stand alongside key stakeholders to reduce maternal and child mortality across the state.

Winning this award as the medical missions wrap up is the ultimate validation of our team's dedication.
