The Language of Symbols: Tracing Meaning Across Time and Textiles in Akwa Ibom State

Across centuries, the people of Akwa Ibom have used symbols (carved, painted, or woven) to express identity, spirituality, and social structure.

Our latest feature, The Language of Symbols explores this visual vocabulary through conversations with artists Mike Asukwo and Dr. Umana Ginigeme Nnochiri,
revealing how indigenous design systems like Nsibidi continue to influence contemporary creative practice.

At Anyen Iyak Foundation, we believe that understanding our symbolic past empowers today’s artists, educators, and cultural custodians to build meaningful bridges between tradition and innovation.

YAK ASIERE!

Today, with heavy hearts, we say goodbye to our physical space.

It served as a center for cultural celebration, a place where we experienced the rich culture and beauty of the Akwa Ibom people.

Though we say goodbye, our mission carries on. We remain committed to walking this journey with you, and we look forward to the new places where our community will continue to grow together.

This might be the end of a beautiful chapter, but the laughter, stories, and countless memories created within those walls will stay with us forever and we are grateful to have experienced it all with you! 🙏🏾🤍

INI, AKS in postcards.

Located on the northernmost section of AKS, with a land expanse of 320,451 square kilometers which stretches into Abia state in its mileage. It is home to most of Akwaibom’s numerous terrains featuring valleys, creeks, and swamps due to its location near rivers and the influence of the Atlantic Ocean. Natural resources found within Ini include limestone, clay, gravel, fine sand, crude oil, gold and iron ore. The forest region provides timber and firewood.
