YCRD Esit Eket Part 3!

We witnessed active participation in the breakout session. Participants were told to have open discussions on “key issues affecting communities and practical ideas and solutions for intervention.”

Last Friday, we celebrated Democracy Day, which should be a reminder that young people have the right to be actively involved in decisions that shape their communities, especially those affecting their environment, quality of life, and livelihoods.

This is exactly why this project is so timely.

Our voices matter, and the future depends on our participation.

Every action counts. Every voice matters.

This World Environment Day, let's recommit to protecting our environment, strengthening climate resilience, and building a sustainable future for all.

The Earth is not just where we live, it is what sustains us. From the air we breathe to the water we drink and the food we eat, our wellbeing is deeply connected to the health of our environment.

To commemorate this day, we'd love to hear from you!

Tell us in the comments:
What is one sustainable practice you actively do to help the environment?

Happy World Environment Day!

Few days ago was Children’s Day. It is sobering to think that many of those in charge of our failed systems were once children too. Children who grew up seeing bad practices as normal.

You look at certain things and see them as normal.
We don’t.

We see the 3-year-old breathing in polluted air with no choice.
We see the child drinking water that was never truly questioned.
We see the teenager walking through flooded streets like it’s just part of life.
Even the ones who have been trained to navigate insecure areas like professionals.

Slowly, what should raise alarm becomes routine.

But normal is not always safe.

At SHADEF, we see what often gets ignored, not just the harmful practices, but the children growing up inside them.

Children experiencing repeated coughs, asthma, and respiratory strain from polluted air.
Children suffering food and water-borne illnesses like typhoid, cholera, and persistent diarrhoea from unsafe water.
Children quietly adapting to environments that shape their long-term health and future actions.

We see the cycle repeating because what is not questioned is often continued.

But we also see possibility.

We see children who can be informed early.
Children who can unlearn harmful norms.
Children who can grow into adults that challenge what no longer serves them.

That is why we do what we do.

Because awareness is not just information, it is protection!

A Gentle Welcome to June

May this month bring the quiet strength of nature’s renewal. Let us move with intention, rooted in purpose, and open to the subtle beauty that surrounds us.

May your path align with clarity, your efforts bloom with grace, and your presence nurture both self and surroundings.

Thank you for growing with SHADEF. Together, let us create spaces that reflect harmony, elegance, and mindful progress.
Wishing you a month of peaceful abundance and meaningful steps forward.

Happy Children’s Day to all the beautiful souls who make the world brighter

From SHADEF, we celebrate every child’s right to joy, laughter, and a safe future. But today, we refuse to stay silent about the children who are paying a heavy price for simply being born in these lands
Oil spills destroying their farmlands and rivers.
Breathing polluted air that steals their health.
Innocent children kidnapped, held for ransom, beaten, and robbed of their childhood.

These are not statistics, these are real children with dreams just like ours.

This Children’s Day, SHADEF stands with every child who is suffering. We call for:

✅ Environmental remediation and justice
✅ Protection from kidnapping and violence
✅ Access to quality education and healthcare
✅ A future where no child suffers for where they were born

Let our celebration fuel real change. Every child deserves to thrive, not just survive.

We’ve normalized an environment that quietly fails us because we failed her first.

Blocked drainage systems that remain unattended until flooding becomes inevitable.
Waste disposal practices that prioritize convenience over safety.
Spaces where environmental responsibility is treated as optional.

It no longer feels like something is wrong, because “it has always been this way”.

But systems like these do not exist without consequences.

They contribute to disease spread, environmental degradation, poor sanitation outcomes, and long-term public health strain.
They also shape behaviour, what is seen, over time, becomes what is repeated.

And this is where the cycle continues.

Thank you Rooted Rising Initiative for visiting us and for spotlighting part of the work we do on upcycling.

We look forward to seeing the team again.
