NDAC 2026 is here, and we are still building on a conversation that began with intention.

In 2022, the Niger Delta Alternatives Convergence (NDAC) was framed through a careful examination of the socio-ecological challenges in the region, rooted in historical injustices, environmental degradation, and the persistent neglect of meaningful solutions.

We appreciate Health of Mother Earth FoundationHOMEF for creating the NDAC material and making it possible for SHADEF to simplify and share it in a way that is accessible and easily understood by youths in communities.

As conversations continue today at the Fifth Niger Delta Alternatives Convergence (NDAC 2026), the focus remains critical, Abandoned and non-decommissioned oil and gas facilities, and what they mean for people, environment, and justice in the Niger Delta.

Around the world, here in Nigeria, we normalise warning signs. We rarely pay attention to our surroundings, or even our bodies when they speak.

We walk past clogged drainage like it’s normal.
We ignore the smoke-filled air from generators and traffic.
We drink unsafe water because “there’s no other option.”
We look at abandoned oil wells, shake our heads and say "government"
We dismiss constant headaches, coughs, and fatigue as just part of daily life.

But these are not just inconveniences, they are signals.

Signals that our environment is under stress.
Signals that our health may already be affected.

At SHADEF, we believe awareness must go beyond seeing, it must lead to action.

Because when warning signs are ignored, risks grow silently.

Today, choose to listen.
Pay attention to your environment.
Pay attention to your body.
Speak up. Take action. Protect your health.

What we normalise today can cost us tomorrow.

THE DANGER MIGHT BE INVISIBLE, BUT IT IS EVERYWHERE!

Environmental health is not a distant issue, it is a present-day crisis.
Did you know that 1 in 4 global deaths is linked to environmental factors such as pollution, unsafe water, and poor sanitation?
Even more alarming, air pollution alone continues to claim millions of lives every year.
And now, we are facing an even more disturbing reality, microplastics are in the air we breathe, adding to already polluted air from gas emissions and other harmful pollutants.
This is no longer just about the environment, it is a public health emergency.
If we don’t sit up now, the situation will only get worse. We can no longer afford to watch from the sidelines. Everyone must become an agent of change.
Protecting our environment means protecting our lives. The time to act is now.

Airborne microplastics are warming our planet!

A new study published in Nature Climate Change on May 4, 2026 reveals that microplastics and nanoplastics in the atmosphere have a direct radiative forcing effect. In some regions, their warming impact is as high as 16% of black carbon’s effect.

Even more alarming: Land-based sources such as tyre wear and synthetic textiles emit over 20 times more microplastic particles into the air than the oceans.

This makes our daily fight against plastic pollution more critical than ever.

We have to continue to tackle this issue through consistent education, awareness, and practical action to reduce plastic waste before it breaks down into harmful microplastics.

Every piece of plastic we prevent from entering the environment helps protect our climate and future generations.

Our environment is changing rapidly, and the effects are no longer distant. From climate shifts to pollution and disappearing ecosystems, the signs are all around us.
Today, we’re reminded that sustainability is not a one-day commitment. It is in our daily choices, what we consume, how we dispose, and how intentional we are about protecting the spaces around us.

Organizations, institutions, and individuals must move beyond awareness toward measurable, sustained action. This includes embedding sustainable practices into operations, supporting environmentally responsible policies, and fostering collective responsibility.
As we mark Earth Day today, the question is not whether we care about the planet, it is whether our actions consistently reflect that care.

The environment does not respond to intentions; it responds to behavior.
