STREET MENTORS NETWORK ENCOURAGES CHILD PARTICIPATION IN DECISION MAKING.

One of the most powerful moments from our Press Briefing was not just what was said by stakeholders—but what was shared by the children themselves.

Some of the children spoke.
They shared their stories.
And in those moments, the room grew quiet.

You could feel it.

Their voices were honest, raw, and deeply human—and for many in the room, it brought tears. Not out of pity, but out of a deeper understanding of what these children truly go through.

This is why it is important that children are not just spoken about, but are given the opportunity to be part of the conversation.

Because:
👉 They are not just beneficiaries
👉 They are not just statistics
👉 They are voices that matter

When we create safe spaces for children to speak, we move closer to solutions that are real, inclusive, and impactful.

At SMN, we will continue to ensure that children are seen, heard, and respected.

STREET MENTORS NETWORK HOSTED A SUCCESSFUL PRESS BRIEFING TO MARK THE INTERNATIONAL DAY FOR STREET CHILDREN IN UYO, AKWA IBOM STATE.

On the 13th of April 2026, we convened stakeholders, media, and partners for our Press Briefing in commemoration of the International Day for Street Children 2026.

It was more than an event.
It was a moment of reflection, truth, and shared responsibility.

We had honest conversations about the realities children in street situations face — not just poverty, but stigma, neglect, and systems that sometimes punish instead of protect.

At the heart of it all was a simple message:
These are children, not criminals.

We are grateful to everyone who honored our invitation, lent their voice, and stood with us to amplify the call to “Protect, Don’t Punish.”

Huge thanks to S.P Iwar Bala O/C Anti-child theft unit, State CID, Ms. Joy Ubong, E.D YOFCI, Mr. John Umo-Otong, AKS Coordinator of Child Protection Network Nigeria, our Moderator, Mr. Aniekan Ukpe, Nigerian Television Authority(NTA) Uyo, and other members of the Press too numerous to mention.

And a special thanks to our dear partners Safe Child Africa for their support.

But the work does not end here.

What happens next?

We are calling on:

Government: To strengthen child protection systems and prioritize rehabilitation over punishment

Communities: To reject harmful labels and safeguard vulnerable children

Media: To continue to tell these stories with empathy and responsibility

Partners: Support sustainable interventions that restore dignity and opportunity to act.

Every child we protect today is a future we secure tomorrow.

Let’s move from awareness to action.

Today is International Day for Street Children.

A day that reminds us that behind every child on the street is a story — not of crime, but of circumstance. A story shaped by poverty, abuse, neglect, and systems that have not done enough.

At Street Mentors Network, we see these children every day. We work with them, learn from them, and walk with them on their journey back to safety, dignity, and opportunity.

This year’s theme, “Access to Justice: Protect, Don’t Punish,” speaks directly to a reality we cannot ignore — too many street-connected children are treated as offenders instead of being protected as children.

That is why this conversation must go beyond today.

Tomorrow, we will be hosting a Press Briefing to bring together stakeholders, media, and partners to deepen this conversation, share insights from our work, and call for collective action.

Because awareness is important — but action is what creates change.

If we truly believe every child deserves protection, then we must be willing to rethink how we respond to children in street situations.

The question is not whether this issue exists.
The question is: what are we doing about it?

Our alternative education initiative supports children who have been disconnected from formal schooling by providing:

✔ Structured learning sessions
✔ Literacy and numeracy support
✔ Mentorship engagement

Child vulnerability is not random, it is rooted in systemic gaps.

Children living in street situations often face:

• Interrupted education
• Weak social protection systems
• Poverty-driven displacement
• Limited workforce pathways
• Increased risk of exploitation

Addressing these challenges requires:

✔ Multi-sector collaboration
✔ Education reintegration strategies
✔ Family strengthening programs
✔ Youth employment initiatives
✔ Rights-based policy advocacy

Child protection is not a short-term intervention.

It is a long-term development investment.

We advocate for integrated solutions that prioritize prevention, not just response.

If you believe in systems-level change, share this post to amplify the conversation.

Every organization begins with a moment of awareness.

For Street Mentors Network, that moment came from witnessing a child navigating life without protection, stability, or access to education.

What began as a simple act of compassion evolved into a structured response to a systemic challenge:

Children living in street situations without access to opportunity.

Today, Street Mentors Network operates with a clear mission:

✔ Advance child protection systems
✔ Restore access to education
✔ Provide structured mentorship
✔ Equip youth with vocational skills
✔ Promote gender equity
✔ Strengthen reintegration pathways

This journey has reinforced a powerful truth:
Sustainable impact requires structure, accountability, and collaboration.

We are not just responding to vulnerability.

We are building systems of opportunity.

Follow our page over the next 90 days as we share impact insights, policy conversations, and opportunities for engagement.

Change begins with awareness.

Transformation requires participation.

Gender inequality remains one of the most persistent barriers to sustainable development.

When girls lack access to education and economic participation, societies lose:

• Skilled workforce potential
• Innovation capacity
• Leadership diversity
• Economic productivity

Gender-responsive policy frameworks should prioritize:

✔ Education retention strategies
✔ Protection against early exploitation
✔ Vocational access for adolescent girls
✔ Leadership and civic engagement pathways

Advancing gender equality is not symbolic reform, it is economic strategy.

Investing in girls strengthens national GDP, health outcomes, and social stability.

Gender equity must remain central to development agendas.

Economic vulnerability significantly increases child protection risks.

When families and youth lack income opportunities, children face:
• Increased exposure to labor exploitation
• Education discontinuity
• Migration risks
• Intergenerational poverty

Workforce development and vocational training are not separate from child protection, they are directly connected.

Policy frameworks must integrate:

✔ Youth skills development
✔ Microenterprise support
✔ Financial literacy education
✔ Gender-inclusive employment strategies

Economic empowerment reduces structural vulnerability.

Investment in decent work pathways strengthens both families and national economies.

Child protection and economic policy must work together.
