Who are the Ibibio?
In as much as we are not going to join in the controversial discourse of who actually the Ibibio are.We are going to base our foundation on the different clans of Ibibioland as established by early history and historians...
Such a historical view could be based on precedents like the famous indisputable Ibibio State Union and its composition...no disrespect or harm intended...no disparaging or undermining intended... today one could claim to be Oron...Efik...Ibeno...Ekid...Annang...Obolo.
But we must be reminded and made to be conscious that...in the beginning it was not so... what we are propagating on Atung Ibibio Heritage Centre is the wholesomeness of the group earlier known as Ibibio.
There are Ibibio clans in even areas that claim to be different from Ibibio today...we are not oblivious of the threats and impositions of migration on persons of the same stock and origin.
We are out to assuage those negative tendencies and foster cultural unity amongst all dispersed clans of the Ibibio race... what was first acknowledged as Ibibio is what we are standing for.David Ukpong et al state that,"a careful study of Ibibio in their present homeland reveals that throughout the present Ibibio Country, various communities and villages are named after Ibom their ancestral founder as a way of immortalizing him and the town originally founded by him"p¹⁸... to be cont'd.

It's on record that there is a group of people today called Ibibio in the Republic of Zaire who speak Ibibio and play Ekpe masquerade.It is known that there is a slice of Ibibio in the small country called Antigua in the Caribbean who call the European...bakara..a direct adulteration of the word.. mbakara.It is believed that some Ibibio persons were taken left on the island to work in their plantation before slavery was abolished.They have been practicing the little they recall of Ibibio Heritage especially folklore.

Akpanyoho... masquerade is a prominent feature in Ibibio land..it comes in different sizes... colours.. types... dimensions depending on the tone of its message... what it depicts in the community...

Origin... Name... meaning
Atungibibio aligns with the thoughts..ideas.. views.. concerns.. conclusions of earlier researchers.. documentarists on Ibibio until there are superior and higher arguments to the contrary..
The name Ibibio is Ibibio in origin and means the children of or followers of Ibom...the father and founder of the Ibibio race...he founded Ibom in Arochukwu..he lived there until the strife with the Igbo neighbours in about 1550AD..
Ibibio came from South Sudan through the Benue Valley and settled in Arochukwu... sources in Arochukwu still claim that "the Ibibio later moved away from Ibom village and founded the present Akwa Ibom State, the Atos still refer to Ikono Ibom as one of the 48villages of Igbo villages in diapora."⁷
