ADVANCING CHILD PROTECTION THROUGH LOCAL COLLABORATION
On 15th October 2025, Uromi JDPCI convened its biannual coordination meeting with the Local Government Child Protection Committees in Esan Central and Esan West LGAs. The meeting aimed to enhance consultation, knowledge sharing, and collaboration among key protection actors to strengthen the community-level response to child trafficking for sexual exploitation.
In attendance were HODs Social Welfare, National Orientation Agency (NOA), Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Nigeria Police Force (NPF), Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS), community representatives, and field officers.
Delivering his goodwill message, the Executive Director, Very Rev. Fr. Dr. Fidelis Arhedo, emphasized the need for stronger collaboration among stakeholders. He urged all agencies to work collectively to combat the menace of child trafficking and safeguard the future of children across communities.
Feedback showed remarkable community engagement, with sensitization activities held in churches, markets, and communities. Notable actions included the re-enrolment of 15 out-of-school children in Opoji, interventions in cases of child labor and neglect, and the enrollment of out-of-school child in skill acquisition programs in Ogwa. The Nigeria Police reported a case involving a woman engaged in child selling, now under investigation, while the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) continued sensitizing hotel operators to prevent the presence and exploitation of minors in Esan West.
Through these coordinated actions, stakeholders demonstrated renewed energy and shared accountability in building safer and more resilient communities for children.
Uromi JDPCI remains committed to strengthening partnerships and sustaining collective action to ensure that every child in Edo Central is protected from trafficking and exploitation.

COLLECTIVE ACTION FOR CHILD SAFETY: UROMI JDPCI REVIEWS PROGRESS
On 14th October 2025, Uromi JDPCI convened its quarterly coordination meeting with LGA Caseworkers and Child Champion Club Mentors across the five LGAs in Edo Central Senatorial District at the Chancery Hall, Egbele-Uromi, under the Act Against Child Trafficking in Nigeria (AACTING) Project, coordinated by ECPAT France and Luxembourg. The meeting brought together key stakeholders including HODs of Legal and Social Welfare Units, Security Agencies, and Community representatives to review progress, share experiences, and strengthen collaboration in the fight against child trafficking and exploitation.
In his address, the Executive Director of Uromi JDPCI, Very Rev. Fr. Dr. Fidelis Arhedo, commended participants for their unwavering commitment and emphasized the need for unity, data-driven action, and accountability in child protection interventions.
Since the project began in December 2022, notable achievements included increased community sensitization, established Child Champion Clubs, strengthened referral systems, and capacity building for frontline workers.
The coordinated effort is already yielding tangible impact. In Igueben LGA, joint interventions led to the closure of brothels in Ebelle community, where young girls were being sexually exploited — a major breakthrough in local protection efforts. In Esan West LGA, stakeholders raised urgent concerns over the construction of a brothel opposite a school, highlighting the moral and psychological risks posed to students and calling for swift action from law enforcement and planning authorities.
To address ongoing challenges, participants recommended intensified school-based awareness programs, stronger zoning regulations to prevent harmful establishments near schools, increased funding and logistics for child protection units, and the formation of community surveillance groups to support real-time reporting and referral strengthening.
Uromi JDPCI remains steadfast in its role of providing technical coordination to build safer communities and ensuring every child lives in dignity, free from exploitation and abuse.

UROMI JDPCI CELEBRATES MIGRANTS AS MISSIONARIES OF HOPE
Uromi JDPCI, in collaboration with the Chancellor of the Catholic Diocese of Uromi, Rev. Fr. Dr. Hilary Odenore, joined the global Church to joyfully commemorate the Jubilee of Migrants, at Mary the Queen Catholic Church, Arue-Uromi, on the 5th of October 2025 under the inspiring theme: “Migrants, Missionaries of Hope.”
The celebration was filled with prayer, reflection, and gratitude — honouring the courage, faith, and resilience of migrants who continue to shine as examples of hope in a world often marked by fear and division. Migrants remind us that humanity is one family, united by shared hopes and dreams. In the courageous journeys of migrants, we see the face of Christ who once fled with Mary and Joseph as a refugee.
The people were called to Welcome, Protect, Promote, and Integrate our brothers and sisters on the move, ensuring that no one feels forgotten or excluded. Through their faith, perseverance, and rich cultural heritage, migrants bring new energy, renewal, and vitality to our Church and communities.

Let us open our hearts, homes, and parishes to be true witnesses of God’s love and mercy — building a world where hope knows no borders and every migrant truly stands as a Missionary of Hope.
When we walk with migrants, we walk with Christ.

EMPOWERING ADOLESCENTS, STRENGTHENING FAMILIES AND BUILDING PEACE
Uromi JDPCI wrapped up its quarterly (July–September) Adolescents Human Rights discussion with visits to Annunciation Catholic College, Irrua Girls Secondary School, and Idunwele Girls Secondary School on the 2nd of October 2025.
The theme “Communicating with My Parents/Caregivers” stressed the importance of open and respectful communication with parents in creating harmony and preventing conflict at home. Students learned practical skills such as presenting requests with facts, choosing the right time to talk, staying calm, listening actively, and persisting respectfully.
The sessions were highly interactive, with students sharing experiences communicating with their parents, correcting misconceptions, and learning skills to improve relationships at home and in school.
Students gained fresh insights on responding to their parents calmly, even when requests are not meant, recognizing that shouting is both disrespectful and ineffective. The session further encouraged the value of patience and respectful communication as more effective ways to build stronger and healthier family relationships.
The previous lessons continue to yield results. A student testified that his family noticed he had become more mindful in his interactions, responding with thoughtfulness and calm.
Uromi JDPCI urges parents, caregivers, teachers, and all who guide children to join hands in raising a generation of adolescents who embody patience and respectful communication in building stronger families and more peaceful communities.

NURTURING THE NEXT GENERATION OF CONFIDENT VOICES
In continuation of the capacity building efforts for adolescents, Uromi JDPCI engaged students of Egoro Amede Secondary, Emaudo Secondary, Eguare Secondary and Ujoeien Grammar Schools on the 30th of September 2025.
Guided by the theme “Communicating with My Parents/Caregivers,” the sessions highlighted the importance of open and respectful communication in preventing unnecessary conflict and nurturing healthier family relationships. Students were introduced to the convincing skills such as preparing requests with facts, choosing the right moment to talk, staying calm while expressing their views, actively listening, and respectfully persisting when needed.
The sessions provided a lively space for students to share their own experiences, explore new skills, and reflect on how these lessons could improve their interactions at home and in school.
Interestingly, the previous lessons are already transforming behavior and relationships. A student approached an unfriendly neigbhour and reconciled peacefully with her. Two students committed to responding to their mothers with calmness and respect when sent on errand.
with one voice, let us nurture a generation of confident, resilient, and conscious voices for stronger families and a more peaceful society.

UROMI JDPCI STRENGTHENS ADOLESCENT COMMUNICATION AND HUMAN RIGHTS AWARENESS
On the 26th of September 2025, Uromi JDPCI, through its Human Rights Education and Paralegal Scheme, sponsored by Misereor, conducted its Quarterly Adolescent Human Rights Learning Sessions across 4 schools in Esan Central LGA including Opoji Commercial Secondary, Ugbegun Grammar and Ewu Grammar Schools and Esan West LGA in Uhiele Grammar School. The sessions were designed to empower adolescents with essential life skills, inspiring them to grow into resilient, responsible, and confident adults, while enhancing their understanding of human rights and how to safeguard themselves against violations.
The theme of the session was “Communicating with My Parents/Caregivers,” which highlighted the importance of respectful dialogue in strengthening family bonds, resolving conflicts peacefully, and enhancing mutual understanding. Additionally, the session introduced key “convincing skills” that equip young people to communicate more effectively with their caregivers. These skills include preparing requests with relevant facts, choosing the right moment to initiate conversations, staying calm while expressing their views, actively listening to their caregivers’ opinions, and respectfully persisting when necessary.
The sessions were highly interactive, incorporating illustrations and opportunities for students to share their past experiences communicating with their parents. This process helped them appreciate the lesson and identify gaps in their relationships and fostered a strong commitment to improving communication through the skills learnt.
Feedback from previous lessons indicates steady and notable behavioral changes among students. For example, a student who was a habitual latecomer improved his punctuality after reflecting on the topic of making the right choices. Another student, who had been insulted by a friend for misplacing her textbook, applied lessons on making the right choices and effective communication by calmly discussing the issue later, leading to mutual apologies and reconciliation.
