🧠 1-MINUTE HEALTH TALK

When should you worry about a headache?

Most headaches are not caused by a serious illness and may improve with rest, hydration, or simple pain relief.

However, a headache that is sudden, extremely severe, or different from your usual headaches should not be ignored.

🚨 Seek urgent medical attention if a headache:
• Starts suddenly and becomes severe within seconds or minutes
• Occurs after a significant head injury
• Comes with weakness, numbness, difficulty speaking, confusion, or loss of consciousness
• Is accompanied by a high fever and stiff neck
• Causes repeated vomiting or significant changes in vision
• Keeps getting worse or occurs much more frequently than usual

For recurring headaches, keep a record of when they occur, how long they last, and possible triggers such as poor sleep, dehydration, stress, or missed meals.

Listen to your body. Persistent or unusual symptoms deserve proper medical assessment. 🩺

Imagine this...

A 19-year-old student notices symptoms that worry her. She wants to visit a clinic, but she's afraid of what people might say. What if they think she has HIV? What if her friends find out? What if she gets judged?

So she keeps quiet.

Weeks turn into months. A problem that could have been addressed early becomes much bigger, not because help wasn't available, but because stigma got in the way.

Sadly, this story is more common than many people realize.

Stigma, fear, and misinformation continue to prevent young people from accessing the healthcare they need. The good news? We can change that through honest conversations, accurate information, and supportive communities.

On the 28th of the month was a beautiful reminder that when young people are given the right information, they become powerful agents of change.

We successfully held a Youth Health Rights Workshop and Outreach at the College of Health Sciences, Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Okofia, where we engaged students on their health rights, access to healthcare services, and the importance of speaking up against stigma and discrimination related to HIV, TB, and malaria.

This activity was supported through funding facilitated by Chidubem Ibeh from the GCTA - Global Coalition of TB Advocates, with implementation facilitated through our partnership between Parkers Mobile Clinic and GenHealth Africa.

A special appreciation to Restoration Chukwudi, one of our promising youth leaders at GenHealth Africa, who facilitated the session and did an excellent job connecting with the students and making the discussions practical, relatable, and engaging.

Beyond the conversations, we also distributed Youth Health Rights Booklets to help participants better understand their rights and how to access health services. Female students also received sanitary pads as part of our commitment to promoting menstrual health and dignity.

Seeing the enthusiasm, questions, and active participation from the students was inspiring. It reminded us that creating healthier communities starts with empowering young people with knowledge, confidence, and the tools they need to make informed decisions.

My sincere appreciation goes to the Global Coalition of TB Advocates (GCTA) for supporting this important work, to Parkers Mobile Clinic and GenHealth Africa for their partnership, and to the management and students of the College of Health Sciences, Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Okofia, for warmly welcoming us.

This is just one step in our journey of breaking down barriers to healthcare and ensuring that every young person can access the information and services they deserve.
