ABIA STATE JOINS GLOBAL COMMUNITY TO CELEBRATE INTERNATIONAL DAY OF CHARITY
UMUAHIA, ABIA STATE - SEPTEMBER 5, 2024
Yesterday, Abia State joined the rest of the world to commemorate the International Day of Charity, a United Nations-designated day aimed at promoting charitable activities and philanthropy worldwide. The celebration which held in Umuahia, was marked with fanfare, goodwill messages, and philanthropic gestures.
The International Day of Charity, observed annually on September 5, honors the anniversary of Mother Teresa's passing in 1997. It recognizes the selfless contributions of individuals and organizations working tirelessly to make a positive impact on their communities. The day serves as a reminder of the importance of giving, volunteering, and charitable acts that improve the lives of others.
The wife of the Abia State Governor, Her Excellency, Mrs. Priscilla Chidinma Otti, was at the forefront of the celebrations. She flagged off a series of charitable activities aimed at supporting vulnerable groups across the state.
During her keynote address, Mrs. Otti emphasized the significance of charity in building a more compassionate society. In her words, "Charity is not just about giving; it's about empowering others to create positive change. As individuals and as a community, we must strive to make a difference in the lives of those around us, especially now that citizens are going through the harsh economic realities in our nation."
To commemorate the day, the Abia State First Lady undertook the various initiatives:
1. Offsetting the hospital bills of patients in the Federal Medical Center, Umuahia, who had undergone treatment and discharged but could not return home, due to unsettled medical bills. Noteably the case of a young who had been there for over a year after recovery.
2. She also supported small businesses at Orie Ugba market, with some seed money to help grow their businesses
3. The highlight of the day was the distribution of food and other relief item to beggars and homeless people around Umuahia Town.
4. A charity walk was also organized, bringing together government officials, community leaders, and residents to raise awareness about the importance of charity and philanthropy.
Reacting to the First Lady's initiatives, Mr. Stanley Ofor, a beneficiary of the offset medical bill, expressed gratitude, saying, "Today has given me hope, a chance live again and to improve my family's well-being, I had lost hope of ever leaving this hospital because I have no properties to sell or even a kind relative to call for help. I thank the First Lady for her kindness, may God Almighty bless her."
The Hon. Commissioner for Poverty Alleviation and Social Protection, Hon. Mrs Ngozi Blessing Felix, praised the First Lady's efforts, stating, "Her Excellency's commitment to charitable causes is inspiring. Her selfless work has positively impacted countless lives across Abia State."
The International Day of Charity celebration in Abia State serves as a testament to the power of philanthropy and community spirit. As the world continues to face various challenges, the importance of charitable giving and volunteerism cannot be overstated. The Abia State First Lady's initiatives have set a shining example for others to follow, inspiring a culture of kindness and generosity that will have a lasting impact on the state.
