Akwa Ibom State launched its “Ward Based” model of Community Based Health Insurance (CBHI) Scheme in August 2014. This is an integral part of the drive for Universal Health Coverage nationwide. The CBHI model is characterized by “pooling at the Ward level” with a “Community Trust Fund” at the Local Government level. Both the Pool/Scheme and the Fund are managed by community members, selected throu
gh an open process, who make up the Board of Trustees (BoT) registered with the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC). The Scheme and the Fund are regulated by the State Ministry of Health (SMoH) and the Local Government Authorities (LGA). The CBHI scheme is characterized by:
Primary Care at the Primary Health Care Facility Ikot Ideh and its staff from Essien Udim Local Government Area (LGA); Secondary/Referral Services at the Cottage Hospital Ukana and the staff from the Health Management Board (HMB).
