Day 1: Okene is the second training location in Global Peace Development’s effort to strengthen local capacity to prevent and resolve farmer-herder conflicts across Kogi State, following the training held in Kabba.

Implemented by Global Peace Development under the L-PRES Project, with funding support from the World Bank Group, the training focuses on using Alternative Dispute Resolution mechanisms to address farmer-herder conflicts and promote peaceful coexistence across communities.

Opening the training, GPD’s Director of Programmes highlighted the importance of peaceful coexistence between farmers and pastoralists, noting that when communities manage conflicts peacefully, livelihoods are protected and local economies have room to grow.

Farmers, herders, traditional leaders, and security personnel took part in practical exercises focused on crop destruction, compensation, grazing access, mediation, and community dialogue. The sessions are equipping local actors with practical skills to address disputes early, strengthen dialogue, and prevent conflicts from escalating.

Day two moved from theory into practice in Kabba.

Participants were taken through the fundamentals of Alternative Dispute Resolution, mediation, negotiation, arbitration, and conciliation, before learning how to select the right mechanism for a given dispute. The day built on this with hands-on skills training in mediation and negotiation, covering effective communication, active listening, and how to manage emotions during a mediation process, practiced through demonstration and role play using real-life farmer-herder scenarios.

The final session looked at community-based peacebuilding, exploring how traditional dispute resolution institutions can work alongside formal systems, and the role community peace committees play in sustaining local ownership of conflict resolution.

The two-day training closed with the presentation of certificates to participants, marking the completion of their training in Alternative Dispute Resolution.

The training was implemented by Global Peace Development under the L-PRES project, with funding support from the World Bank.

A two-day training on Alternative Dispute Resolution for Livestock Value Chain Stakeholders is taking place in Kabba, Kogi State.

Day one brought together security agents, herder representatives, traditional leaders, farmers, and other community stakeholders in Kabba to build local capacity for preventing and resolving conflict between farming and pastoral communities.

Speaking at the opening, the Executive Director of Global Peace Development said, "When farmers and pastoralists coexist peacefully, communities thrive, livelihoods are protected, and local economies grow." He noted that growing pressure on land, water, and other natural resources continues to trigger disputes that, if left unmanaged, can undermine those shared benefits.

The training, implemented by Global Peace Development under the L-PRES project with funding support from the World Bank, continues tomorrow with sessions on mediation, negotiation, and community-based dispute resolution.

A child who isn't safe cannot grow. A woman who lives in fear cannot lead.

That's why child protection and ending Gender Based Violence sit at the center of Global Peace Development's work, not on the side of it.

We don't see these as "soft" issues to mention alongside the real programmes. They are the real work. No community moves forward while its most vulnerable members are left exposed.

This is one of the things we stand for. And we're not quiet about it.

Ukpude community in Delta State now has its own WASH Committee.

Under the Local Rights Programme, Global Peace Development, with funding support from ActionAid Nigeria worked directly with Ukpude community in Isoko South LGA of Delta State to select and train WASHCOM members who will lead on WASH-related activities in the community. Before now, the community do not have WASH Committe to address issues around access to safe drinking water, sanitation, operation and maintenance of water facilities.

The WASHCOM Members will coordinate the management of the water facility when it is constructed to improve accountability and promote healthy hygiene practices within the community.

The Local Rights Programme is implemented by Global Peace Development, with funding support from ActionAid Nigeria, to address poverty, inequality, and social injustice in marginalized communities. It uses a Human Rights-Based Approach that helps people understand, claim, and enjoy their fundamental human rights. In Ukpude and other communities, the programme builds local capacity, strengthens community leadership, resilience and improves access to basic social amenities such as clean water, health, and education.
