A LEADER IS A SERVANT: WELCOME ADDRESS
By: PRINCE AMB. JOHN ALEX OGHUVWU*
MESEN NATIONAL COMMANDANT GENERAL
MILLENNIUM ELITE SAFETY-EDU NETWORK
My fellow Nigerians,
My people of Delta State,
Distinguished leaders, elders, youths, women, students, and workers,
Good day and welcome.
Today, I welcome everyone present. In leadership, to welcome is the first duty.
1.WHO IS A LEADER?
A leader is not the person who occupies the highest office.
A leader is the person who carries the greatest responsibility.
A leader does not give instructions and walk away.
A leader remains to ensure that the work is completed.
A leader is the eyes for those who cannot see.
A leader is the voice for those who are unheard.
A leader works while others rest.
A leader feels the pain of the people.
A leader is a teacher, a protector, a guide, and above all, a servant.
Without a leader, a family will be scattered.
Without a leader, a group will be confused.
Without a leader, an organization will collapse.
Without a leader, a society will have no direction.
This is why God, nature, and society continually raise leaders.
2.WHY LEADERSHIP IS A POSITION OF SERVICE
The essence of leadership is service.
A true leader serves before he is served.
A true leader ensures that others are fed before he eats.
A true leader stands in the heat so that others may rest in the shade.
A true leader carries the burden when others are weak.
A true leader humbles himself to lift others up.
Our Lord Jesus Christ washed the feet of His disciples to teach us this principle.
The greatest presidents, kings, and commanders in history were servants first.
At MESEN, we say: WORK ALONG WITH ME.
I am not here to be served. I am here to serve you.
I am here to serve the youth.
I am here to serve the public.
I am here to serve Nigeria.
If one cannot serve, one cannot lead.
If one despises service, one despises leadership.
Service is the hallmark of true leadership.
3.WHY WE NEED LEADERS IN SOCIETY, IN GROUPS, AND IN ORGANIZATIONS
Every home requires a head.
Every vehicle requires a driver.
Every ship requires a captain.
Every army requires a commander.
Every school requires a principal.
Every market requires a chairman.
Every nation requires leaders.
Why? Because without a leader there is confusion.
Without a leader there is no plan.
Without a leader there is no discipline.
Without a leader there is no security.
Without a leader there is no progress.
Leaders define the vision.
Leaders set the standard.
Leaders provide the example.
Leaders bring order out of chaos.
Leaders bring hope in times of fear.
Leaders bring light into darkness.
In MESEN, we need leaders to promote safety.
In MESEN, we need leaders to maintain a clean environment.
In MESEN, we need leaders to develop our youth.
A society without leaders is like a body without a head.
4.WHY A LEADER MUST WELCOME EVERYONE
I welcome everyone here today because welcome is a demonstration of strength.
When a leader welcomes people, he creates unity.
When a leader welcomes people, he removes fear.
When a leader welcomes people, he builds trust.
When a leader welcomes people, he invites new ideas.
When a leader welcomes people, he gains collective strength.
I welcome the rich and the poor.
I welcome the educated and the skilled artisan.
I welcome the youth and the elderly.
I welcome men and women.
I welcome Christians and Muslims.
I welcome indigenes of Delta State and visitors from other states.
In MESEN, no individual is insignificant.
In Nigeria, no community is insignificant.
In nation-building, every contribution is required.
A leader who rejects people will lead alone.
A leader who welcomes people will lead a multitude.
5.WHY A LEADER MUST LISTEN TO EVERYONE
A leader was given two ears and one mouth for a reason.
A leader must listen more than he speaks.
Why must a leader listen?
1. To understand problems: One cannot solve what one does not hear.
2. To gain ideas; The youth may offer innovation. The elderly may offer wisdom. Women may notice details. Workers understand the realities on the ground.
3. To make people feel valued: When people are heard, they give their best.
4. To avoid errors*: A leader who refuses to listen will misdirect the people.
We must listen to students in classrooms.
We must listen to traders in the market.
We must listen to drivers on the road.
We must listen to cleaners in offices.
We must even listen to critics, because criticism can provide lessons.
A leader who does not listen is like a driver with closed eyes.
A leader who listens will be followed even in difficult times.
This is why at MESEN, our doors are open. We listen. We work together.
6.THE LEADER AND THE PEOPLE: WORKING TOGETHER
My people, leadership is not a crown. Leadership is a responsibility.
Leadership is not comfort. Leadership is sacrifice.
Leadership is not pride. Leadership is humility.
Therefore, I call on all of us today:
If you are a youth, bring your energy.
If you are an elder, bring your wisdom.
If you are a business owner, bring your resources.
If you are a parent, bring proper upbringing.
If you are a leader, bring structure and direction.
Let us work together.
Let us build safe schools.
Let us build clean markets.
Let us build safe workplaces.
Let us build a Nigeria where no one is left behind.
CONCLUSION
My brothers and sisters, please remember these three principles:
1.A LEADER IS A SERVANT He serves first.
2.A LEADER WELCOMES EVERYONE
Because every person matters.
3.A LEADER LISTENS TO EVERYONE
Because wisdom is found in the people.
When we uphold these principles:
WORK ALONG WITH ME,
YOU WILL NEVER BE LEFT BEHIND,
AND BY GOD’S GRACE, YOU WILL SUCCEED.
Nigeria will succeed.
The youth will succeed.
And history will record that in our time, we chose to serve together.
Thank you for coming.
Thank you for listening.
God bless you.
God bless the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
