There is a part of Northern Nigeria where cultural beliefs still promote restrictions on girls and women during menstruation.

In some of these communities, menstruating girls are not allowed to;

Pray, Cook, Mingle with others, or even step outside their homes.

These restrictions are rooted in stigma, misinformation, and deeply held taboos surrounding menstruation.

Such practices not only violate the dignity of women and girls but also hinder their participation in normal daily activities.

Some of them are meant to miss school on days they are menstruating.

They instill shame and silence around a natural biological process that should be treated with respect and understanding.

Menstruation is not a curse.

It is not something to be ashamed of.

It is a sign of health, fertility, and womanhood.

Girls and women deserve to manage their periods with dignity, access to clean menstrual products, proper hygiene, and without fear of discrimination or exclusion.

Yesterday, Dare to Dream Girl Child Foundation partnered with Blaizing TEENS Initiative to commemorate World Menstrual Hygiene Day.

We’re working towards breaking the stigma that surrounds menstruation and creating a safe space for the girl child during menstruation .

Let’s Educate.

Let’s create a safe and inclusive society for every girl and woman

Yesterday,

Dare to Dream Girl Child Foundation and Blaizing TEENS Initiative visited a group of children we often see but rarely look at twice, the ALMAJIRI.

It broke me.

These are young boys and girls, most of them between the ages of 5 and 15,

Who have been sent far from home, not for play or comfort, but to study the Qur’an in extremely difficult conditions.

In the past, the Almajiri system was a noble way to seek Islamic knowledge.

But what we saw yesterday was far from noble.

These children are living in poverty, neglect, and pain.

Many sleep on bare floors, eat only when someone gives them food, and spend most of their day begging on the streets just to survive.

They should be in safe homes, learning, playing, growing like every child deserves to.

I cried.

Tiny feet barefoot on hot ground.

Empty plates.

Sick eyes with no medical care.

Torn clothes.

No toys, just the sound of hunger and hardship.

May be they are the Unfortunate ones born into abject poverty.

This isn’t just about charity

It’s about PASSION FOR HUMANITY.

Every child counts, including the Almajiri.

Happy Children’s Day,

To the ones without parents, yet still full of joy and hope.

To the ones who go to bed hungry, yet still rise with strength.

To the ones who walk long miles to school, yet carry dreams in their hearts.

To the ones who face challenges daily, yet never stop smiling.

To the ones surrounded by love, and to the ones still seeking it.

Today, we celebrate you the same way the rich are celebrated .

Over here;

Dare to Dream Girl Child Foundation ;

We celebrate your strengths .

You are loved.

You are the future.

Yesterday, it sounded funny when I mentioned during the sang pour sang dialogue meeting that,

Any man who can not handle menstrual cramps should not be in a relationship.

We have so many men today who do not see any reason why women should lament during menstrual flow.

If you can not handle menstrual cramps, how will you handle me when I am pregnant with complications.

You see most men saying words like,

Is it because of ordinary period you are rolling on the floor??

That’s because you don’t understand how it feels and don’t want to be a part of it by being compassionate.

There is urgent need for the private sector to create safe spaces for menstruators.

Many people who don’t menstruate have little to no idea about the physical pain, discomfort, emotional stress, and even psychological breakdowns that women often experience during their menstrual cycle.

It’s not just about providing sanitary products, it’s about creating environments that are understanding, supportive, and sensitive to these realities.

Imagine battling cramps, fatigue, hormonal shifts, and still being expected to function at 100% with no empathy or provision.

Creating safe spaces means;

• Providing flexible work options when necessary.

• Ensuring menstrual hygiene products are available and accessible.

• Breaking the stigma around menstruation through education and open conversations.

• Encouraging policies that recognize and respect the reality of menstrual health.

Menstruation is not a taboo, it’s a biological process.

Ignoring it only fosters shame, silence, and unnecessary suffering.

It’s time to move from “it’s none of my business” to “how can we make life better for our women and girls?”

This meeting was super explosive.

I have so much to share with you all.

But let me drop just one major take away for now.

You see that idea you’ve been holding onto?

That plan you’ve been sitting on,

Waiting for the “perfect” time to execute.

Someone, somewhere in one country, one city, or even a tiny village has that exact same idea.

And if not the exact same idea, something very similar.

And guess what?

If you don’t act on it now while you have the time, the energy, someone else will.

They’ll carry it out.

They’ll run with it.

And you’ll sit there, watching your idea become their breakthrough.

You’ll watch them execute.
You’ll watch them build.
And you’ll watch them reap the fruits.

The difference isn’t the idea. It’s the action.

ACT NOW.
