The Delta State Government (DTSG) has launched its State Strategic Plan (SSP) for HIV/AIDS, targeting the years 2025-2027. This initiative aims to significantly reduce HIV infections and improve treatment access for those affected. The unveiling ceremony happened in Asaba, led by Governor Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, who emphasized the need for collective action to confront the HIV crisis in the state.
Dr. Kingsley Emu, Secretary to the State Government and chair of the Delta State Agency for the Control of HIV/AIDS, represented the governor at the event. He underscored the plan’s practicality and effectiveness. Governor Oborevwori noted that HIV and hepatitis screenings will be integrated into the State Contributory Health Insurance Scheme and emphasized prioritizing free maternal health programs to improve HIV treatment accessibility.
With Delta State's HIV prevalence currently at 1.4%, higher than the national average, Governor Oborevwori called for collaboration with the private sector and NGOs to create a funding forum to support HIV/AIDS treatment initiatives.
He also highlighted the importance of grassroots sensitization through traditional and religious institutions to mitigate HIV transmission risks associated with migration. The governor pledged a commitment to inclusivity, engaging stakeholders across all 25 Local Government Areas and 370 wards to strengthen the HIV response.
Dr. Rudolf Hobson, Executive Secretary of the Delta State Agency for the Control of HIV/AIDS, explained that the SSP was developed inclusively, involving various government entities, civil society organizations, and individuals living with HIV to ensure its robustness and stakeholder ownership.
Currently, approximately 65,368 individuals in Delta State are living with HIV, with a prevalence rate of about 1.9%, which surpasses the national average of 1.4%. Presently, 51,723 individuals (79%) are receiving treatment, leaving 13,645 individuals (21%) without access to care. In the latest reporting cycle, DELSACA recorded about 4,000 new HIV infections, prompting Dr. Hobson to call for greater government support to enhance response efforts and close treatment gaps.
He concluded by noting that 95% of individuals infected with HIV have been identified and linked to care, marking a significant achievement in the ongoing fight against HIV/AIDS.
Through this strategic plan, the Delta State Government aims to create a collaborative environment that will effectively combat HIV/AIDS in the coming years, ensuring a healthier future for its residents.
