10 Basic Security Tips for Corps Members as their Calls for Service Looms:
You will or may be serving in 1 of the 36 States in Nigeria including FCT Abuja as the case may be. None of these areas are 100% safe.
So the most important thing is to stay alert, not afraid. You don’t need to be perfect—just consistent and careful.
Keep these in mind:
1. Stay aware of your environment:
Always know what’s happening around you. Listen to local updates, follow NYSC instructions, and pay attention to what people in your area are saying. Avoid places you’re not familiar with.
2. Don’t move around carelessly —especially at night:
Try not to go out late unless it’s necessary. If you must go out, don’t go alone—move with someone you trust and stick to busy, known areas.
3. Choose the safest accommodation available:
You may not get a perfect place, but pick somewhere with people around, good lighting (if possible), and basic security. Avoid isolated buildings as much as possible.
4. Keep a low profile:
Dress simple, don’t show valuables, and don’t share too much personal information with people you just met. The goal is to avoid unnecessary attention.
5. Build trusted connections gradually not in a haste:
Get close to fellow corps members, neighbors, or reliable locals—but take your time. Don’t trust too quickly; observe people first.
6. Be smart about transportation:
Use only familiar or trusted transport options. Avoid isolated rides, and always let someone know where you’re going.
7. Always have emergency contacts ready:
Save important numbers—NYSC officials, local security, and trusted friends. Make sure your phone is always reachable.
8. Be careful with what you post online:
Don’t share your real-time location or daily routine on social media. It’s better to post later than to expose yourself.
9. Trust your instincts immediately:
If something feels off, don’t ignore it. Leave the area calmly and quickly. You don’t need to wait for confirmation.
10. Always be prepared:
Keep your phone charged, have a power bank (if possible), carry some emergency cash (if available), and always have your ID with you.
Finally,
Just stay alert, move smart, and don’t isolate yourself. You don’t have to be scared—you just have to be careful and intentional about your safety.
