On Sunday, 31st August 2025, the United Nations Population Fund Youth Participatory Platform (UNFPA YPP), in collaboration with the Literacy Without Border Initiative (LWBI) and the New Green Empowerment Initiative (NGEI), with the support of UNFPA, organized a Community Sensitization and Awareness Activity at Unguwar Talakawa Community, Tsalibawa area, opposite Old Giginyoyi Cemetery, Sokoto, to commemorate the International Youth Day.

The New Green Empowerment Initiative (NGEI) played a significant role in the success of the program by leading the coordination through its Sokoto State Director, Hamidu Almustapha Umar, and providing technical facilitation and expertise through its team. During the event, the girls received both practical knowledge and essential materials that promote menstrual hygiene and well-being. Lectures on hygiene, self-care and menstrual health management were delivered, while practical demonstrations on the proper use and disposal of sanitary pads, as well as the care of undergarments, were also conducted. In addition to the awareness creation, sanitary pads were distributed to adolescent girls in the community, giving them an opportunity to practice safe menstrual hygiene and self-care.

The programme was impactful and well received, as it not only provided sanitary materials but also improved the knowledge and confidence of adolescent girls on issues relating to menstrual health, personal hygiene and overall well-being. The efforts of NGEI and its collaboration with partners have once again shown the importance of collective action in addressing adolescent and youth development challenges.
