Teacher of the Month at Hasken Rayuwa Foundation: Meet Victoria Stephen Timothy...

We celebrate doctors, engineers, and others lucrative professions, but we down look the profession that created them. The teaching career has long been painted as an unrewarding, low-paying job that is restricted to the four walls of a building.

Growing up, I often heard the same expression in school and at home. ‘I don’t want to become a teacher.’ Yet, I often wonder how we arrived at a point where the core builders of every other profession; Doctors, engineers, and lawyers, are treated as low commodities.

Teachers are the bedrock of human progress. Why do we despise the very people who lay the foundation for our growth. It’s nothing new that some people choose teaching as a job, for lack of better opportunities as they put it, but for others it’s an answer to a call.

Meet Miss Victoria Stephen Timothy, teaching was a calling she could no longer ignore. After exploring other paths, she found her true peace and fulfilment in the classroom. “ I became a teacher because I realized teaching is a calling I could no longer ignore. I explored other paths, but nothing gave me the sense of fulfilment and peace I experience in the classroom” she shares.

Today, Victoria serves in her fourth year under our Organisation at Hasken Rayuwa Foundation, working in the Education Department where she teaches English Language and Christian Religious Knowledge (CRK), at Government Secondary school Rijau, Niger State. What drives a teacher to keep going every day? For Victoria, the reward is in the moment of connection. “What I enjoy most about teaching is seeing students understand what has been taught,” she says. “When I ask questions and they respond correctly, it reassures me that the lesson has truly impacted them.” What inspires her to keep serving in this field is the large number of children in public schools with low access to proper education. “What inspires me to keep serving is the large number of children in public schools who do not have access to quality education”.

.....You might assume that only adults bear the burden of trauma and emotional distress, but this perspective overlooks a significant population: children, little girls, teenagers, and even young adults. It is a grave misconception to believe that they are free from worries and struggles; they carry their own heavy burdens that often go unnoticed......

.....I think to myself and wonder how the Fulani woman has been able to live her life under harsh weather and stress or manage the home in such temporary environments. As I drove my kids to school, I couldn’t help but notice how malnourished and stressed out they looked, and I wondered if it was due to an inadequate medical support system or something else. I couldn’t help but imagine the level of hardship they may be coping with—mothers with their kids under the harsh weather scouting for survival. The thought kept pricking my heart.....
