In the third week of April 2026, staff of The Bakhita Initiative -JDPC Sokoto, alongside field staff from Koko/Besse LGA of Kebbi State, and Wurno and Wamakko LGAs of Sokoto State under the SPHERE Project funded by Caring | Church of Jesus Christ and implemented in partnership with CRS Nigeria participated in safeguarding refresher trainings conducted across different locations and days to ensure full inclusion of all teams.

The sessions were led by Chukwunweike Joy, CRS Safe and Dignified Programming Advisor, who shared practical insights and real field examples to deepen staff understanding of safeguarding and its day-to-day application in humanitarian work.

Safeguarding is not a one-time topic, but a continuous responsibility that guides how we interact, make decisions, and support the communities we serve. The refresher helped reinforce key responsibilities such as:

Identifying and responding appropriately to safeguarding concerns
Staying alert to risks affecting vulnerable individuals
Ensuring proper and timely reporting of incidents
Promoting a safe and respectful environment across all project locations

A key part of the session focused on how to appropriately receive a disclosure. Staff were reminded to listen calmly, show empathy, avoid interruption or judgment, refrain from asking leading questions, reassure the individual, ensure immediate safety where necessary, and report through the proper channels.

A powerful reminder from the session was captured in this message:

“Safeguarding starts from our homes.”

This statement emphasized that safeguarding is not only a professional responsibility, but a value that begins in our everyday lives how we treat people, how we speak, and how we respond to others both at home and in the field.

This refresher training reinforces our commitment to ensuring that all our interventions remain safe, respectful, and accountable, where dignity, trust, and protection are at the center of our work.

Today, the Church rejoices — for the tomb is empty, and Christ has conquered sin and death. What once seemed like defeat has become the greatest victory, and what was broken has been made new.

In the light of the Resurrection, we are reminded that no suffering is in vain, no darkness is final, and no burden is beyond God’s redeeming love. The Risen Christ brings hope to every weary heart, peace to every troubled soul, and new life to all who believe.

As we celebrate this sacred day, may our faith be renewed, our hearts be lifted, and our lives transformed by the joy of Easter. Let us go forth as witnesses of His light, carrying hope into our homes, our communities, and our nation.

Alleluia! Christ is risen indeed — and in Him, we are made new.

Today, on Good Friday, we stand at the foot of the Cross — not only in remembrance, but in deep reflection of our present reality.

In the suffering of Christ, we see a mirror of the pain, uncertainty, and struggles many are facing today in Nigeria — insecurity, hardship, loss, and fear. Yet, the Cross reminds us that God is not distant from our suffering; He is present in it.

Christ’s sacrifice speaks to every wounded heart, every grieving family, and every community longing for peace. It calls us not to lose hope, but to hold on to faith — even when the darkness feels overwhelming.

As a people, we are invited to respond with compassion, justice, and love. To stand for what is right, to support one another, and to be instruments of peace in our communities.

Good Friday is not just about suffering — it is about the promise that suffering will not have the final word.

“By His wounds, we are healed.”

May the Cross of Christ strengthen Nigeria, bring comfort to the afflicted, and lead us all toward healing, unity, and lasting peace.

ᴍᴏɴᴅᴀʏ ᴍᴏᴛɪᴠᴀᴛɪᴏɴ: Qᴜᴀʟɪᴛʏ ɪꜱ ɪᴍᴘᴀᴄᴛ

Quality is not just a standard; it’s a responsibility.

Every grain we verify, every commodity we check, ensures that families receive safe, nutritious food and that local markets thrive. Vendor Commodity Quality Verification is more than a process; it’s our commitment to Food Security and Livelihoods (FSL) and to the dignity of every project participant.

The excitement and satisfaction expressed by participants when they receive quality commodities is a powerful reminder that what we do truly matters.

At The Bakhita Initiative JDPC Sokoto, we believe that when we uphold quality, we create lasting impact.

Theme: Water and Gender

The theme “Water and Gender” underscores a powerful reality—access to water is deeply connected to gender equality. In many communities, women and girls carry the burden of fetching water, often walking long distances at the expense of their health, education, and economic opportunities. Addressing this imbalance is key to unlocking dignity, empowerment, and sustainable development.

Today, we join the global community to commemorate World Water Day, led by UN-Water, marking over three decades of collective action toward safe and equitable water access for all.

At the Bakhita Initiative JDPC Sokoto, our work continues to reflect this commitment—supporting communities across Sokoto and Kebbi States with improved water systems and inclusive WASH interventions that recognize and strengthen the role of women as key agents of change.

Because when women and girls have access to safe, reliable water:

Health outcomes improve
Education opportunities increase
Livelihoods are strengthened
Entire communities thrive

As we mark this day, we call on all stakeholders to prioritize inclusive, gender-responsive water solutions that leave no one behind.

Water is life. Equity makes it sustainable.

Standing together in solidarity, staff of The Bakhita Initiative JDPC Sokoto proudly joined the global community to commemorate International Women's Day 2026, celebrating the strength, leadership, and invaluable contributions of women within our team and the communities we serve. 💜

This year’s theme, “Rights. Justice. Action. For All Women and Girls,” is a powerful reminder that achieving equality requires intentional action, collective responsibility, and a continued commitment to protecting the rights and dignity of every woman and girl.

At The Bakhita Initiative JDPC Sokoto, we remain dedicated to advancing inclusive development and empowering women through our work with partners such as CRS, with generous support from Latter-day Saint Charities.

Together, we reaffirm our commitment to building communities where women and girls are empowered, their voices are heard, and their rights are fully realized.

Women play a vital role in shaping families, strengthening communities, and driving progress in society. In homes, they nurture and guide the next generation, instilling values that build responsible and compassionate individuals. Within communities, women contribute to peacebuilding, social cohesion, and social development. In offices and institutions, they bring leadership, creativity, and dedication that help organizations grow and thrive. Their strength, resilience, and commitment continue to shape a better and more inclusive world.
At the Bakhita Initiative (JDPC Sokoto), we recognize and celebrate the invaluable contributions of women as we mark International Women's Day. This year’s theme, “Rights. Justice. Action. For ALL Women and Girls,” calls on individuals, institutions, and communities to go beyond recognition and take meaningful steps toward protecting the rights of women and girls, ensuring justice, and creating equal opportunities for all.
The theme reminds us that true development and lasting peace cannot be achieved without the full participation and empowerment of women. As we celebrate today, we reaffirm our commitment to promoting dignity, equality, and opportunities that enable every woman and girl to reach her full potential and contribute meaningfully to society.
Together, let us continue to advocate, support, and act for a future where every woman and girl can live with dignity, equality, and justice.
Happy International Women’s Day. 💜🌍

St. Josephine Bakhita Day | Day of Prayer and Awareness Against Trafficking in Persons

Today, The Bakhita Initiative (JDPC Sokoto) joins the global community to observe St. Josephine Bakhita Day, marked as the International Day of Prayer and Awareness Against Trafficking in Persons.

St. Josephine Bakhita, a survivor of trafficking, stands as a symbol of resilience, forgiveness, and the dignity of every human person. Her journey from captivity to freedom inspires action against human trafficking, modern slavery, and all forms of exploitation.

In her honour, we reaffirm our commitment to raising awareness, promoting human dignity, and supporting vulnerable women and girls at risk.

CALL TO ACTION:
👉 Speak out against trafficking, support survivors, raise awareness in your community, and report suspected cases to the authorities.

Let us continue to pray for those in captivity, those in the hands of bandits, and all persons suffering exploitation, as St. Josephine Bakhita once did, asking for their freedom, protection, and quick release.

St. Josephine Bakhita, pray for us.
