Today, we celebrate the life and legacy of Sir William Alexander Smith, the founder of the Boys' Brigade. Born on October 27, 1854, in Pennyland House, Thurso, Scotland, Sir William dedicated his life to empowering young people and instilling values of discipline, obedience, and reverence.
As a Sunday school teacher and army officer, Sir William recognized the potential of young people and sought to channel their energy into positive pursuits. On October 4, 1883, he founded the Boys' Brigade at Free Church Mission Hall in Glasgow, Scotland, with a vision to advance Christ's kingdom among boys and promote habits of true Christian manliness.
Under his leadership, the Boys' Brigade grew into a global movement, spreading to over 60 countries, including Nigeria, where it has had a profound impact on countless young lives. Sir William's legacy extends beyond the organization he founded, as his ideas and principles have influenced other youth movements, including the Boy Scouts and Girl Guides.
Sir William's commitment to his faith and his passion for youth development earned him recognition, including a knighthood from King Edward VII in 1909. Though he passed away on May 10, 1914, his legacy lives on through the millions of young people who have been touched by the Boys' Brigade.
