What is planting season without the planting?😊🎊

We trained. We prepared. Months of work led to this moment, 25 women out on their farms, hands in the soil, planting soybeans of their own.
Join us as we celebrate 25 women empowered, not just for themselves, but for their nation too.
With thanks to EU International Partnerships and for making this possible.

This video captures our land preparation session, where farmers were guided step by step on;
✔️how many seeds to plant per hole
✔️The right spacing, and
✔️How to properly form their ridges.

No shortcuts, just hands-on learning that farmers can take straight to their farms.
Because the right foundation makes all the difference at harvest😊

‼️Before sowing any seed, take time to prepare your land properly.‼️
Here's what every farmer should do:

• Clear the field properly: Remove w**ds, old crop residues, stones, and other debris that may compete with your crops or harbor pests.

• Improve the soil with organic matter: Mix compost, well-decomposed animal manure, or decomposed plant materials into the soil. Organic matter improves soil fertility, increases water retention, and supports beneficial microorganisms.

• Loosen the soil: Till or ridge the land to allow roots to grow deeper and access water and nutrients more easily. Avoid excessive tillage, as it can damage soil structure.

• Check soil moisture before planting: Plant when the soil is moist, not waterlogged or completely dry. This gives seeds the best chance to germinate evenly.

• Know your soil: If possible, conduct a simple soil test to understand its nutrient needs. Applying the right fertilizer or soil amendment saves money and improves yields.

👉 Remember: Healthy soil is the foundation of healthy crops. Investing time in soil preparation today can lead to stronger plants, better harvests, and more sustainable farming in the future.

‎
‎In Nigeria alone, rice farmers lose up to 42-100% of yields when w**ds go unchecked.
‎
‎This isn't just about losing crops. It's about:
· ‎Losing income
· ‎Losing food security
· ‎Losing opportunity
‎But here's the thing: you don't have to let it happen. Ever heard of pre-planting herbicides?
‎
‎Pre-planting herbicides are applied before you sow your seeds. They mix into the soil and create a protective barrier, stopping w**d seeds from germinating before your crop even has a chance to grow. Think of it as clearing the field of competition before the race even starts.
‎
‎ 𝐖𝐡𝐲 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐲 𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐭𝐞𝐫: Timing is everything. A one-week delay in w**d control can cut your maize yield by one-third. When you use pre-planting herbicides, you're protecting that critical window.
‎
‎𝐖𝐡𝐞𝐧 𝐭𝐨 𝐚𝐩𝐩𝐥𝐲: During land preparation, before sowing.
‎
‎This is part of our journey with Breaking Gender Barriers by Empowering 25 Women, supported by the EU International Partnerships and Global Youth Mobilization as we build climate-smart agriculture practices that work for real farmers.
‎
‎
‎ave you used pre-planting herbicides on your farm?
‎What results did you see?
‎Did it work for you?
‎What would you tell someone hesitant to try it?

When we were selecting farmland for our climate-smart agriculture project, we encountered a situation that perfectly illustrates this.
One potential site had excellent soil in some areas, but we had to reject it because the land's position meant
✓ Eazy access of animals to graze
✓ Water logging due to uphill position

This automatically meant a key livelihood for the beneficiary would be lost.
Position matters that much.

Here are Five positioning factors every farmer must assess:

• Land space — affects crop spacing and density.
• Soil texture — determines water retention and nutrients.
• Water deposition — shows where runoff flows and waterlogging risk.
• Slope — impacts erosion and water availability.
• Infiltration rate — controls how fast water soaks into soil.

Understanding these factors is exactly what our work with the Youth Empowerment Fund, in partner with EU International Partnerships and Global Youth Mobilization Global Youth Mobilization ensures, making sure that empowerment is not only available but sustainable and tangible.

p.s😉: As a farmer or agriculturist what other factor do you consider before choosing a farm land ?
