Yesterday SWAYA sat with Kabethkache Women development and Social Action listening to scary stories of lived experiences of the people of Bille community by the women who now choose between buying a bag of pure water at #1,500 to cook or buy food for their families. Wows of all manner of sicknesses and diseases, even unexplained death because the entire community has been bubbling with gas since November 2025 and the government still does not have any answer to what's happening in the community.

This is really heartwrenching, Enough is Enough, no one should live in such condition on earth. We stand in Solidarity with the Women of Bille.

Bille the oil-rich Ijaw kingdom in the Degema Local Government Area of Rivers State that is heavily dependent on fishing and maritime activities is currently facing severe ecological crisis involving massive methane gas leaks and groundwater pollution and the OIC in operation and the authorities in charge seems not to know what to do.

Continued gas bubbling in the community, women are suffering, they cannot no longer fish, no water to bath or cook what a pathetic situation in Niger Delta communities while the government, indigenous company and OICs are smile daily to the bank.

SWAYA stands in solidarity with Bille Community calling on the government to save Bille Community now, Save Niger Delta communities.

On this World Environment Day 2026, the theme: “Inspired by Nature. For Climate. For Our Future” should remind us that Nature is our greatest teacher and ally in tackling the climate crisis.

At SWAYA we draw inspiration from nature to drive solutions that restore the ecosystems and protects our communities.
Therefore today in partnership with FUET we donated seedlings to the University and joined in planting trees to commemorate the first world environment day celebrated by the University.

May this day reminds us that this planet is our only home and note that every small choice matters so let us be committed to protect our environment through our actions which are: to plant more trees, cut down waste and choose sustainable ways of living and I appeal we all do same and together, we can build the climate-safe future we all deserve.

The Climate we safe today will be the future we live in tomorrow.
Let’s act now, not later, because restoration starts with each of us.
