At ACEP (African Centre for Environmental Protection), we believe that environmental sustainability begins with informed, empowered communities. On June 13th, 2025, we co-organized a meaningful World Environment Day event at Rivers State University, Port Harcourt, under the theme “Plastic Pollution: Addressing the Crisis and Innovating for a Sustainable Future.”

The program, which focused on engaging female engineering students, created a space for education, dialogue, and inspiration. Participants were challenged to critically examine the environmental and health impacts of plastic pollution while exploring innovative solutions grounded in engineering and advocacy.

The keynote presentation was delivered by Engr. Dr. Kaine Chinwah, whose powerful session unpacked the urgency of the plastic crisis and explored actionable pathways to address it. Her talk set the tone for an afternoon of thoughtful engagement and lively exchange.

Contributions from other speakers further enriched the event. Engr. Dr. Ibiye D. Amafabia of Association of Professional Women Engineers of Nigeria (APWEN) Port Harcourt opened the program by encouraging students to look beyond the classroom and take ownership of their role in shaping sustainable communities. Engr. Dr. Erewari Ukoha-Onuoha, Head of the Department of Agricultural and Environmental Engineering at RSU, and Engr. Asanimo Omezi, General Secretary of the Women in Energy Network (WIEN), shared valuable insights during the discussions. The program was skillfully anchored by Engr. Godbless Igoni, whose relatable and energetic style kept participants engaged. Closing reflections were shared by Engr. Dr. Ela Okowa, who reminded us all that the fight against plastic pollution is not just environmental but also social, requiring collective responsibility.

This event was the result of a collaboration between ACEP, APWEN, and WIEN, with the invaluable support of the Rivers State University academic community.

We remain committed to creating platforms that foster environmental awareness, empower women in STEM, and spark long-term change. The next generation is ready—and ACEP is proud to walk alongside them on the path to sustainabili
