Nearly 300 million people around the world are living with Hepatitis B.
This year's World Hepatitis Day theme was "Hepatitis: Let's Break It Down."
At Benaiah CARE Foundation, in partnership with Pamel Laboratories and Diagnostics Limited, we did our part.
We broke down fear.
We broke down myths.
We broke down ignorance.
People came.
They asked questions.
They got screened.
They received Hepatitis B vaccines, free of charge.
Some people did not receive vaccination because they were not eligible . Yes, that was our reality.
But that wasn't the end of their story.
They received counselling and were referred for appropriate medical care because knowing your status is the beginning, not the end.
For those who who were negative, many received their first dose of the Hepatitis B vaccine and were given vaccination cards to help them complete the remaining doses.
No one should be ashamed to know their Hepatitis B status.
There is no shame in getting tested.
There is no shame in asking questions.
There is no shame in seeking treatment.
If we all do our little part, in our homes, workplaces, communities, and health facilities, we can break down the barriers that keep people from getting the care they need.
One conversation.
One blood sample.
One vaccine.
One person at a time.
That's how we break it down.
