January 28, 2026
Over 500 participants of the Rivers State School-to-Land Agribusiness Scheme have been equipped with crucial financial management skills, following a dedicated training session by the WEAL Global Foundation. The session, titled "Introduction to Financial Literacy in Agribusiness," was presented by Mrs. Edward Idongesit Ekanem Emmanuel, the CEO and Founder of the Foundation. The training focused on moving participants from a traditional farming mindset to a strategic, profit-oriented business approach.
Mrs. Emmanuel began by defining financial literacy as the cornerstone of sustainable business, emphasizing mastery of budgeting, saving, and investing. She drew a clear distinction between farming as an activity and agribusiness as a profit-focused system, urging trainees to see their ventures through the lens of markets and margins. A major segment of the training was dedicated to explaining key financial terms.
Participants were taught the critical differences between Income as total money received), Profit as what remains after all expenses are deducted from income and Cash Flow as the actual movement of money in and out of a business. โThe State Government under the leadership of Sir Siminalayi Fubara, wants you to understand that your total earnings are not the same as your profit and for you to know that is the first step to financial sustainability and stabilityโ Mrs. Emmanuel stated.
The highlight of the event was a vibrant question-and-answer session. Participants actively engaged, posing questions on managing operational finances, pricing their value-added products, and accessing capital. Several shared personal anecdotes of past financial mistakes in their farming operations, resolving to apply their new knowledge to avoid similar pitfalls.
To encourage participation, recharge cards were awarded to selected participants who correctly answered questions during the interactive segment, adding an element of incentive to the learning process. A trainee who remarked, "Before today, I only counted the money from my sales. I never properly accounted for the cost of labor, transport, and wastage. Now I understand how to calculate my true profit and plan for growth."
The training by WEAL Global Foundation provided an essential complement to the technical preharvest and postharvest skills taught during the course of the training, ensuring the new agri-entrepreneurs are prepared not only to produce and process efficiently but also to manage their businesses for long-term profitability and growth.
