Social Action, in collaboration with Rivers State Civil Society Organizations, condemns attacks on journalists in Port Harcourt
At a press conference convened by Social Action in collaboration with Rivers State Civil Society Organizations today, April 27, 2026, civil society leaders strongly condemned the recent attacks on journalists in Port Harcourt, describing them as a dangerous assault on press freedom, democracy, and citizens’ right to access information.
As Nigeria approaches the 2027 general elections, attacks on media practitioners threaten transparency, accountability, and public trust in the democratic process. Journalists must be allowed to carry out their constitutional responsibilities without fear, harassment, or violence.
The coalition called for:
✔️ Immediate investigation and prosecution of perpetrators
✔️ Protection of journalists and media houses in Rivers State
✔️ Stronger security measures for journalists under threat
✔️ Collaboration between INEC and the media to ensure safe election coverage
✔️ Greater support systems for journalists reporting sensitive issues
Civil society groups also urged political actors to respect democratic values, reject violence, and refrain from rhetoric that endangers journalists.
An attack on one journalist is an attack on democracy itself.
Social Action and Rivers State CSOs remain committed to defending human rights, civic freedoms, and ensuring peaceful, free, and credible elections in 2027.
