Happy Wetlands Day 2026
The World Wetlands Day 2026 theme (“Wetlands and traditional knowledge: Celebrating cultural heritage”) complements our UN Ocean Decade endorsed project; African Youth Sustainable Ocean Campaign - AYSOC , through this action we are addressing challenge 2 (Protect and Restore marine ecosystems) by promoting ecological restoration grounded in community and cultural knowledge, advocating for inclusive stewardship, and highlighting nature-based solutions as essential for resilient, sustainable aquatic and coastal systems. Integrating traditional knowledge with scientific innovation bridges cultural heritage with modern restoration goals, reinforcing our work’s impact at local, continental, and international scales.

🎉🐢 Great news: Green turtles are no longer in danger of extinction!

The latest IUCN Red List of Threatened Species, released on 10 October, updated the status of the green sea turtle from 'Endangered' to 'Least Concern'.

Since the 1970s, thanks to decades of sustained conservation action, the global green turtle population has increased by 28%, despite ongoing threats.

“The ongoing global recovery of the green turtle is a powerful example of what coordinated global conservation over decades can achieve to stabilise and even restore populations of long-lived marine species. Such approaches must focus not only on the turtles, but on keeping their habitats healthy, and their ecological functions intact. Sea turtles cannot survive without healthy oceans and coasts, and humans can’t either. Sustained conservation efforts are key to assuring that this recovery lasts,” said Roderic Mast, Co-Chair of IUCN’s Species Survival Commission Marine Turtle Specialist Group.

Happy World Maritime Day 2025
World Maritime Day 2025 focuses on advancing the role of shipping and maritime activities in driving ocean sustainability. The theme underscores the critical need to balance global trade growth with the protection of marine ecosystems. As shipping accounts for over 80% of international trade, its environmental footprint directly impacts ocean health and climate resilience. This year’s commemoration highlights innovation in decarbonization, green ports, and digitalization as pathways to reduce emissions and pollution. It also calls for stronger international cooperation to safeguard biodiversity and mitigate marine litter from shipping. Importantly, the theme aligns with the UN Decade of Ocean Science, linking maritime governance with ocean conservation. For coastal and island nations, it presents an opportunity to harness the Blue Economy sustainably while protecting livelihoods. Ultimately, World Maritime Day 2025 reaffirms that a sustainable ocean is central to a thriving, equitable, and resilient maritime future.
