New details from the 2026 national budget document show that while Nigerians are being asked to tighten their belts, the President Bola Tinubu administration is loosening the public purse at the A*o Rock Presidential Villa; and the numbers are too big to ignore.
Let us start with the National Assembly. The Federal Government approved ₦70 billion to buy vehicles for the Federal Lawmakers. Each SUV costs ₦160 million. That is money that could build hundreds of Classrooms or equip Primary Health Centres across the country.
In the same budget, another ₦1.5 billion was added for vehicles attached to the Office of the First Lady. The problem is that the 1999 Constitution does not recognise that Office. So, ₦1.5 billion of taxpayers money is going to an Office that does not legally exist; at the same time, the citizens are told to endure the subsidy removal and rising food prices.
The Presidency is not different. More than ₦5 billion was budgeted for new cars for the Presidential fleet. Then the government went ahead to buy a new Presidential jet for over $150 million. At the current exchange rate, that is well over ₦200 billion spent on one aircraft. That jet will also cost billions of naira more to maintain every year. All of this happened while the government said that there is no money for salary increase, no money for food support and no money to cushion the hardship caused by its own economic policies.
Inside the A*o Rock Villa, the waste continues. ₦21 billion has been earmarked to renovate the Vice President’s official residence. Another ₦4 billion was set aside for Dodan Barracks, and ₦3 billion for Aguda House. That is ₦28 billion to refurbish buildings that are already standing and well maintained. The President himself had admitted on national television, that many Nigerians cannot afford one meal a day. Yet, his government is spending billions of naira to ensure that government Officials live in more comfort.
The cost of running the Federal Government under President Tinubu has also exploded. The current administration runs the largest cabinet in Nigeria’s democratic history. Every Minister comes with a ridiculous amount of Aides, convoys and allowances. In just a few months, the Presidency has spent billions on local and international travels. None of this spending has translated into cheaper food, better Hospitals or more jobs.
The most troubling item is the ₦15 trillion Lagos-Calabar Coastal road. ₦15 trillion for just one road project. Procurement rules were reportedly bypassed, and there was no open competitive bidding that Nigerians could track for the project. That amount of money could build thousands of Schools, equip Hospitals in all 36 States and create jobs for millions of young Nigerians. Instead, it has been locked into one project.
This is why the recent advice for Nigerians to trek and skip meals just like the President is claimed to do daily, does not make any sense. Trekking saves nothing. Skipping lunch saves nothing. Real savings will come from cutting these wastes. Cancel the ₦70 billion car deal. Stop the ₦28 billion renovations. Open the ₦15 trillion road project for public scrutiny. Reduce the size and cost of government.
Nigerians can see the new jets. They can see the ₦160 million SUVs. They can see the billions for buildings and trips. What they cannot see is relief in the Market, medicine in Hospitals and jobs for their children.
If President Tinubu wants to lead by example, it will not be by walking to his office. It will be by cutting waste, because Nigerians are already sacrificing every day. They deserve a government that sacrifices with them, not at their expense.
