UPDATE ON MAZI NNAMDI KANU’S APPEAL AT THE COURT OF APPEAL
By Chief Maxwell C. Opara, Ph.D
31st May, 2026
There has been a lot of misinformation and speculation on social media regarding the true status of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu’s appeal against his conviction and sentence. Several persons have reached out for clarification. I therefore provide this update.
I earlier informed you that we had successfully compiled and transmitted the Records of Appeal. The next procedural step was the preparation and filing of the Appellant’s Brief of Argument.
Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, having elected to exercise his constitutional right to self-representation, requested that we prepare the brief and guide him through it.
Today, 31st May, 2026, I was in Sokoto and personally delivered to him a copy of the Appellant’s Brief of Argument prepared by me. As always, he graciously received it. He stated that he will review it alongside briefs prepared by other legal experts he has consulted, and will forward it for filing within the week.
After filing, the Appellant’s Brief will be served on the Federal Government. They will then file their Respondent’s Brief and Cross-Appellant’s Brief, and serve same on Mazi Nnamdi Kanu to enable him file a Reply Brief. Upon completion of the exchange of briefs, the Court of Appeal will assign a date for hearing of the appeal.
Mazi Nnamdi Kanu remains in high spirits and has sent his warm greetings to all lovers of freedom and justice.
I am publishing herewith the copy of the Appellant’s Brief of Argument I prepared and delivered to him today. I invite you to read it for yourselves and judge whether his trial, conviction, and sentence were founded on law, or driven by animus.
Please disregard false narratives being circulated by detractors about Mazi Nnamdi Kanu and this case. We shall continue to keep the public duly updated as the matter progresses.
Be assured that Onye Ndu Mazi Nnamdi Kanu will be free to continue his advocacy for freedom and justice.
