"In 2022, unexpected challenges threatened attainment of our project goals from the very start. Addressing the challenges inspired us to reflect on our common practices from different lenses, identify barriers and hinderances, discover new opportunities and frameworks, refine our strategies and build more robust team force. We're pleased to be ending 2022 in accordance with a projects timeline and indicators. We expect better outcomes in 2023 by carrying over lessons learned. Happy new year in advance."

Yesterday, DOP team completed a 5-day dyslexia diagnosis at Community Primary School, Rumuokwachi, Obio-akpor LGA, Rivers State.

Over 290 pupils received free dyslexia diagnosis which has enhanced dyslexia awareness and informed the provision of structured literacy instructions in the school.

The exercise continues with the four other selected schools involved in the DRSSI intervention programme.

Degema Local Government Area is the fifth of the five local governments selected for the DRSSI pilot programme.

Yesterday, DOP team successfully engaged Degema LGEA to activate strong collaboration for the implementation of the DRSSI programme in the locality.

The DRSSI programme, which is focused on facilitating grassroots inclusive education in Rivers State through dyslexia intervention, enjoyed wide appreciation and acceptance by the community and people of Degema.

However, the community expressed concern for sustainability and expansion of the programme after the pilot. This is due to their practical experience and knowledge of suspected large number of dyslexic children spread across the community schools.

As a response, DOP is very commited to sustain the DRSSI intervention in Degema to ensure that every dyslexic child and young learner in government primary and, in the longrun, junior and senior secondary schools, who are excluded in education, and suffering stigmatizations and prejudices, receives effective intervention to succeed in school and benefit from lifelong learning opportunities.

Yesterday marks the completion of the first phase of the DRSSI implementation which is stakeholders engagement.

Thanks to the partnership of Rivers State UBE Board to achieve this impact and facilitate realization of SDG4 in marginalised and need-base rural communities through the DRSSI intervention programme.

Dyslexic children living in rural communities are ten times at risk of prolonged academic failures than non-dyslexics.

Yesterday, as part of the DRSSI programme, Dyslexia Orientation Project - DOP team engaged Oyinbo Local Government Education Authority (LGEA) and identified State Model Primary School, as a need-base school for the pilot programme.

The purpose was to forge collaboration and advance intervention for dyslexic children in the school through the DRSSI programme.

The DRSSI programme is delivered in partnership with Rivers State Universal Basic Education Board (RSUBEB).

99% of teachers at Central Primary School, Igwuruta, Ikwerre Local Government Area (LGA) of Rivers State, are ignorant of dyslexia. With 1 in 5 dyslexic pupils already excluded in the learning process, what effort is DOP making about this?

Yesterday, still in the period of implementing the DRSSI programme in Rivers State, a team from DOP facilitated a one-day teachers and school leaders dyslexia awareness and sensitization workshop at Central Primary School.

The exercise impacted 21 teachers from the school and dismissed ignorance by exposing teachers to the true nature of dyslexia and how it works.

This undertaken inspired the teachers to clearly see the difficulties dyslexic children have been experiencing in the school which hinders their learning attainments. Through participatory approach, the teachers realised opportunities for proper accommodation and support mechanism to ensure inclusion of dyslexic children.

Thanks to the RSUBEB partnership.

Yesterday, progressing with the implementation of the DRSSI pilot programme to facilitate more inclusive education system, Dyslexia Orientation Project - DOP visited St. Andrew's Model Primary School, Phalga LGA of Rivers State, which is the second selected sample school out of five for the DRSSI programme.

The visit was to facilitate a one-day teachers and school leaders dyslexia awareness and sensitization workshop.

The engagement impacted about 36 teachers and school leaders from the 4 primary schools that make up St. Andrew's school.

The interactive sessions broaden the perspective of teachers and school leaders about dyslexia, inspired them to see how their roles significantly affect dyslexic children's learning outcomes and mental health, and how they could change that through cooperation with DRSSI programme.

Most importantly, attitudinal adjustments to accommodate the rights of dyslexic children were equally realised which has now created a safer, more equitable and progressive learning environment for dyslexic children across the 4 schools of St. Andrew's.

Thanks to the collaboration of Rivers State UBE Board.

For many years, while school children living with dyslexia in Rivers State have remained invisible, they have equally been facing different forms of discrimination, prejudices and exclusions.

These injustices have led to increased school dropouts, reoccurring mental health issues and socio-economic exclusions from community development.

Today, as part of the interventions of the Dyslexia-Responsive Schools System Initiative (DRSSI) pilot programme, Dyslexia Orientation Project - DOP team was at Phalga local government education authority (LGEA) to increase dyslexia awareness, strengthen commitment and links and address existing misconceptions, inequalities and injustices against dyslexic children at the local government level.

Thanks to the collaboration of Rivers State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB).
