On this day in 1963, renowned scholar, historian, and civil rights activist W. E. B. Du Bois officially became a citizen of Ghana, where he spent the final years of his life contributing to one of the most ambitious intellectual projects of the African diaspora.
Born in 1868 in the United States, Du Bois was one of the most influential Black intellectuals of the 20th century. A pioneering sociologist, he became the first African American to earn a Ph.D. from Harvard University in 1895. Throughout his life, he dedicated his scholarship and activism to challenging racial inequality and advocating for the rights and dignity of people of African descent around the world.
Du Bois was also a co-founder of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) and a leading voice in the global Pan-African movement, which sought unity and solidarity among African peoples and the African diaspora.
In the early 1960s, Du Bois accepted an invitation from Kwame Nkrumah, the first president of independent Ghana, to move to the country and help lead the creation of the Encyclopedia Africana, an ambitious project intended to document the history, culture, and achievements of African peoples worldwide.
Du Bois relocated to Accra, where he was granted Ghanaian citizenship in 1963. The move symbolized his lifelong commitment to Pan-Africanism and his belief that the future of the African diaspora was deeply connected to the independence and development of African nations.
Later that same year, on August 27, 1963, W. E. B. Du Bois passed away in Ghana at the age of 95, just one day before the historic March on Washington took place in the United States.
