WORLD CLEANUP DAY 2026 | COASTAL CLEANUP AT IKPULUKU COMMUNITY.
AREAS OF FOCUS: ENVIRONMENT. WATER SANITATION AND HYGIENE
In commemoration of World Cleanup Day 2026, the Rotaract Clubs of Port Harcourt, Port Harcourt Mid-Town, Silver Valley, and Port Harcourt Gateway, in collaboration with My Environment My Wealth and Ocean Conservancy USA, came together for a coastal cleanup exercise at Ikpuluku Community, New Road, Borokiri, Old Port Harcourt Township.
The initiative was driven by a shared commitment to promoting environmental responsibility, protecting our waterways, and encouraging communities to take collective action towards a cleaner and healthier environment. Volunteers worked alongside community members to remove accumulated waste and plastic debris from the coastal area, helping to restore the cleanliness and appearance of the environment while drawing attention to the consequences of improper waste disposal.
Beyond the physical cleanup, the exercise served as an opportunity to engage with residents and reinforce the importance of responsible waste management. Coastal communities are particularly vulnerable to the effects of pollution, as waste discarded on land can eventually find its way into waterways and the ocean. By taking action at the community level, the project highlighted the connection between everyday environmental choices and the health of our rivers, waterways, marine ecosystems, and communities.
The collaboration also demonstrated the power of partnerships in creating sustainable environmental impact. Bringing together Rotaractors, environmental advocates, community members, and an international conservation organisation created a platform for service, awareness, collaboration, and collective responsibility.
World Cleanup Day is more than a day to pick up waste; it is a reminder that the environment we want tomorrow is shaped by the choices we make today.
Through this initiative, the participating Rotaract Clubs reaffirmed their commitment to Service Above Self and to building communities where environmental sustainability is not merely discussed but actively practised.
