On the International Day of Families, we call out the continuous weaponisation of "family" in Africa❗️
A coordinated push is underway to narrow the definition of family down to a western, heteronormative, capitalist model; a husband, a wife, and their children. The Draft African Charter on Family, Sovereignty and Values is the latest and most dangerous example of this.
This Charter, and laws like it, are what is un-African.
African families have always been about communities and villages; strangers from the same village are cousins. Extended households led by grandmothers. Children raised together by the community 🌼🌻
African kinship was never just married people. It is always about people choosing each other.
Real family policy looks like safety, healthcare, care systems, and legal recognition, for every family, in every form they've always taken here ✊🏾
