“A Christian Hid Me in His Wife’s Room” Muslim Survivor Recounts Escape from Plateau Attack

Jos, Plateau State In the midst of chaos and violence, a powerful story of humanity and courage has emerged from the Angwan Rukuba community in Jos North Local Government Area.

Sa’idu Murtala, a garden egg seller, has recounted how a Christian man risked everything to save his life during a deadly attack that shook the area.

According to Sa’idu, the incident began on an otherwise normal evening. He had gone to visit a friend in the neighborhood and was waiting for him to close his business so they could return home together.

> “I asked him when he would close so we could leave,” Sa’idu said. “He told me around 7:30 pm, but later said we should wait until 9:30 pm to make more sales.”

While waiting, Sa’idu stepped out briefly. As the night progressed, the atmosphere suddenly turned tense.

> “We started hearing gunshots,” he recalled. “When we looked, we saw security operatives anti-drug officers wearing uniforms. Within seconds, they began shooting indiscriminately.”

Panic spread quickly. People ran in all directions for safety.

> “Everyone fled. The security forces opened fire on anyone in sight. I was hit in the leg and seriously injured,” he said.

As the situation escalated, the attackers reportedly withdrew. However, the violence took a dangerous turn.

> “After that, some youths in Angwan Rukuba began targeting Hausas and Muslims, seeking revenge,” Sa’idu explained.

In the middle of the chaos, help came from an unexpected place.

> “A Christian man took me into his house and hid me in his wife’s room,” he said.

But the danger was far from over. Someone who knew Sa’idu recognized him and attempted to expose him.

> “A man I used to help charge his phone saw where I was hidden. He came and said, ‘I know him he is a Muslim.’”

Despite the risk, the Christian man stood firm.

> “He went outside to confront him. After some time, he came back and told me, ‘Calm down, nothing will happen to you.’”

The man and his family went further to ensure Sa’idu’s safety.

> “They gave me food, took my father’s phone number, and called him to inform him I was safe,” Sa’idu said.

They then made a careful plan for his escape.

> “He said we should wait until late at night when the situation was calmer. Then they contacted security personnel to es**rt me out.”

That plan worked.

> “They eventually brought security officers who took me to safety. By the grace of God, I survived.”

A Story Beyond Division

Sa’idu’s story stands as a powerful reminder that even in times of division and violence, humanity can prevail over hatred. His survival was not just luck but the result of courage, compassion, and the willingness of one man to protect another, regardless of religion.

> “I am alive today because someone chose humanity over hatred,” Sa’idu said.

So today i was headed for the Federal University of Technology Owerri (FUTO) and boarded a bus at the bus park

We were waiting for 2 more passengers for the bus to fill so we can proceed

Then this Hausa guy came along took a look at the bus and became reluctant to board

At first i didn't understand why but then with a quick look around i understood that his reluctance was due to the occupants of the remaining 2 seats which happens to be ladies

One was at the front seat with the driver and the other at the Middle row
and i immediately realised that he didn't want to have contacts with them as he is fasting

So i asked the guy a student seating close to me at the back row of the bus to go and sit in the middle row he obliged without complaint

I now beckoned on the Hausa guy to join me at the back which he gladly did

RESPECT is the only key to lasting Peace
