UNPROFITABLE SERVANTS.
Earnest and Wisdom were colleagues in the same ministry. Both completed training in the same school. As friends, they had some things in common but Earnest was the public type while Wisdom was more in the background. Earnest seemed to have more audience than Wisdom. Unlike Earnest, Wisdom had the gift of service which did not necessarily bring him out. Struggling to also be known, as a result he battled with envy, jealousy and comparison. Wisdom battled with these for a while until he discovered his worth in Christ. Coming to the knowledge that God chose him by mercy brought about deliverance from these lies that the devil had sold to him.
Many of us are like Wisdom in different ways. Especially in ministry, we are quick to forget that we are servants in God's vineyard. And the fact that we are called is a privilege. We are prone to look at others and envy them in their work. This in turn results to unfulfilled longings and discontentment. It further kills our joy and breaks relationships. It breeds selfishness and unbelief.
Jesus told the parable of the unprofitable servants. A master having servants and their duty is nothing but to serve. They don't question the master as to what they are to get in return because they know they are undeserving of anything. Rather, after serving their master, they are to say, we are unprofitable servants. We have done our duty.
"So you also, when you have done everything you were told to do, should say, ‘We are unworthy servants; we have only done our duty.’ ”
Luke 17:10 NIV
God is our Master. He is the owner of the gifts and decides who to give. We have been given various gifts to be used for His glory and praise alone. What is expected of us is that we use our gifts to build one another until all come to maturity in Christ .
God knows our ability. He is not a waster of resources. He gives each man according to his ability. Each of us has been given grace equal to the task, yet by the same Holy Spirit. It was the same power at work In Earnest that was also at work in Wisdom.
When we embrace our gifts and serve with all joy, there will be nothing like competition. It is one God we serve and we will receive the same commendation from the Lord. "Well done, good and faithful servant".
Discontentment kills our joy and Christ is concerned about that. That is why He rebuked Peter when he was bothered about John's work. We cannot also forget that naturally, we were sinners deserving of God's wrath. There was nothing good about us except to be condemned. But He showed us mercy and saved us by His grace. Now, in Christ, we are privileged to be channels for His use.
Beloved, it is not your grace but His, the wisdom to work does not come from you, neither the utterance nor the people. Everything comes from the Lord. What do we have that we didn't receive?
Are you struggling with your work? Do you envy others? Is comparison getting a grip over you? Then take your burdens to Christ. He will give you rest for your soul. May we always remain in the reality that we are nothing but UNPROFITABLE SERVANTS.
