Virgin Heart Foundation Inaugurates 60 FGM Survivors to Champion the Fight Against FGM in Isu and Njaba

As part of efforts to accelerate the abandonment of Female Ge***al Mutilation (FGM) in Imo State, Virgin Heart Foundation (VHF) successfully conducted a 1-Day Orientation and Inauguration of 60 FGM Survivors on 5th and 6th August 2026 across Isu and Njaba Local Government Areas.

The programme equipped the 60 survivors with knowledge on the harmful effects of FGM, their rights, available support services, and their role as advocates against the practice. The participants were formally inaugurated as FGM Survivor Champions and charged to use their voices and lived experiences to promote the abandonment of FGM, Gender-Based Violence (GBV), and other harmful traditional practices within their communities.

The event was attended by UNICEF South-East Field Officer, Victor Atuchukwu, who appreciated the survivors for honouring the invitation and encouraged them to remain committed to the movement to end FGM and protect the rights of women and girls.

Delivering a session on the legal implications of harmful traditional practices, the Executive Director of Virgin Heart Foundation, Peace D**e, highlighted the penalties for violating the Violence Against Persons Prohibition (VAPP) Law, 2021 and the Female Ge***al Mutilation Prohibition Law, 2017, stressing the need for communities to uphold these laws and protect every girl from FGM.

Speaking on behalf of the participants, Chinyere Eugene from Nkume Ancient Kingdom, Njaba LGA, described the orientation as life-changing, saying, “This programme has opened my eyes. I honestly did not know that FGM had no benefits. It is indeed an eye-opener.”

The orientation and inauguration formed part of ongoing community-based interventions to strengthen survivor-led advocacy and promote the abandonment of FGM across Isu and Njaba LGAs. The programme was supported by UNICEF in collaboration with the Imo State Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Welfare, reaffirming a shared commitment to ending FGM and ensuring a safer future for women and girls.
