Fuel crisis: Nwoma Foundation comes to rescue of Lagos Okada riders
The Nwaoma Foundation, founded by Nigerian top model and philanthropist, Nwoma Ukachikwu, has come to the aid of Nigerians grappling with the rising cost of fuel and its impact on everyday life.
The foundation on Saturday embarked on what many described as a rare empowerment initiative by buying fuel for hundreds of commercial motorcycle riders, popularly known as Okada riders, in Lagos.
It filled the fuel tanks of hundreds of motorcycles at the gate bus stop,Ipaja Lagos, as part of its empowerment initiative to celebrate Nigeria’s independence. The development resulted in jubilation among Okada riders in the area.
Excited riders were seen thanking the foundation and its founder, saying the gesture came at a critical time when they needed support.
“This is laudable because, at this point, fuel is gold. Whoever empowers you with fuel has put food on your table already,” one of the Okada riders said.
Speaking shortly after the empowerment, Ukachikwu said Okada riders were among those often forgotten or ignored by society despite their important role in easing transportation.
She said, “These are people we can’t ignore. They are very important in modern-day Nigeria. They have helped to make life better and more affordable through the services they offer.
“Imagine how difficult it would have been without these people. How will you move from point A to point B when our transport system still has a long way to go?
“Yet, these are people mostly ignored during policy formulation. I thought it was the right time to do this because the majority of them are currently struggling, even with families.
“Most of them have their children in universities and other schools. This is why we must support them now.
“If we support one another, we will build a better society,” she said.
