Reason 3: Ibrahim, age 9

Ibrahim is an intelligent boy, fast and a lover of football

Ibrahim enjoys paper crafts and has built a Kajuru castle frame with cartons

He loves paper craft as much as he loves learning new words

But Ibrahim is deaf and his school had no provisions for children with disabilities

That's when we came in

JED connected him to a specialist online programme designed for differently-abled learners

Ibrahim is not only learning new words, he's learning a whole new language too

At Jed Child Trust, we say every child, not most children

Every single child matters and their differences do too

Ibrahim's story is one reason why we advocate for inclusive education

Reason 2: Adaeze, age 12

Adaeze wanted to be an engineer but her school had no maths teacher for two years

JED's digital programme filled that gap

She sat a state maths exam last term and she passed with a great grade

Picture that!

Two years without a maths teacher but just one programme

Just one passing grade has kept her dream alive

This is why we show up, to keep dreams alive, dreams that circumstances would have shut down

Share this for Adaeze and the girls who aspire to be in STEM

We understand that literacy is the gateway to everything else

A child who can read is 3x more likely to complete secondary school

A child who completes secondary school is 5x more likely to find stable employment

A child who can communicate fluently is 7x more likely to grow in entrepreneurship

This is why we start with the basics

Because the basics are everything

A quick Google search will bring this otherwise terrible information but a glaring truth to your notice

Nigeria remains the country with the most out of school children globally

Not just in Africa, we are the top contenders in the global pandemic of lack of access to basic education

UNICEF Nigeria reports that one in every five of the world's out of school children is in Nigeria

The estimates indicate that over 10.5 million to 20 million children of ages 5-14 and 6-18 are not in school

This makes up to 20% of the world's out of school population

The many reasons for this saddening statistics include

The Government's continued negligence of the educational sector. It is a fact that Nigeria has never historically allocated more than 10% of its national budget to education which is far below the 26% recommended by the United Nations

Following closely after this is the insecure state of the nation. Violent groups frequently target schools and students especially in Northen Nigeria, and also conflicts in various communities and states have made school buildings abandoned and education forgone

We must also mention the Infrastructure issues, collapsing buildings or in some cases, no school buildings at all, outdated systems, very few teachers who are also not compensated appropriately

There is also the growing economic decline which has forced parents to withdraw their children and increased child labour

You must have seen a child hawking on the streets this morning

It's the effect of the disease that is eating us skin deep

This is the unhealthy reality of the country, Nigeria and

Actions have to be taken to bring a lasting solution to this problem

Share with us, what do you think about Nigeria's education pandemic and what actions can be taken for steady results?

What if we started an Impact Story series with the

Would you read each story and feel the impact each child felt when JED showed up?

YES?

Alright, let's do it

Reason 1- Chukwuemeka, the farmer boy

This is Chukwuemeka

He hadn't been to school in three months because his family needed him on the farm

And the farm produce were not an investment for his education, just for the house to feed

He had given up...on his school friends, on formal education

But when JED's outreach team arrived in his village and enrolled him in our online learning programme

He couldn't believe it

He actually cried

He didn't know a farmer boy could also get access to education

And we proved him wrong, by giving him his right

"I thought school was over for me," he said

It wasn't and now he teaches his fellow farmers the knowledge he learns in school

Every child deserves that moment of hope and we need you to help us create more of them

Is this reason enough?

60 children using 6 chairs, we don't need a calculator to know the math is wrong

It means 10 children have to seat on 1 chair and if you've experienced wooden desks, you'll know they're not made that long

So this means some children get seated while some don't

Some children actually have to make do with sitting on the floor

And this sad scenario can be found in most public schools

Community schools being a major

What are the community leaders doing?
What are the community members doing?

What is the government doing with public funds?

How bad does it have to get before our leaders start fixing it?

Why can't more than half of the population of children experience the basic right to quality education?

These are the questions is asking

If you lacked something vital for your education in primary and secondary school, you can relate with this

Was it carrying books without a bag?

Was it having to borrow textbooks?

Was it torn or old school uniforms or re-using old notebooks?

Now imagine how you felt when a superhero got one of these for you

This Friday, you can be a superhero to a child out there

Join the

Books, textbooks, pens, school bags...

What's it going to be?

What's your gift to a child today?
