AUGUST MEETING.
The Origin and History of August Meeting (Nzukọ Ọgọst).
WHERE IT STARTED.
The August Meeting started in the 1940s among Igbo women in Southeastern Nigeria.
It did not have one single founder. It grew from two major sources:
TRADITIONAL ROOTS: Before colonial times, Igbo women already had strong groups like
Umuada daughters of the town, and Otu Alutaradi married women.
These groups met to settle disputes, support widows, maintain peace, and handle community welfare.
MISSIONARY INFLUENCE: In the 1940s, Christian groups like the CMS and Catholic Women Organisation CWO began organizing women. Leaders like Mrs. Victoria V.I. Okoye of Onitsha helped give the meetings structure. The church used it to teach leadership, literacy, health, and church participation.
WHY THE MONTH OF AUGUST?
August was chosen for 3 practical reasons:
1. Farming work was over for the season
2. Schools were on holiday
3. It allowed women living in cities and abroad to travel home to their matrimonial villages.
So August became the annual "homecoming" month convenient for Abroaders .
GROWTH AFTER THE NIGERIANS CIVIL WAR 1967-1970.
Before the war it was mainly social and church meetings. After the war, it transformed.
Igboland was destroyed. Government support was poor, and many men were away.
Igbo women took charge. They used August Meeting as a tool for survival and rebuilding. They pooled money to build schools, health centers, boreholes, markets, roads, and town halls.
HOW AUGUST MEETING WORKS TODAY .
The meeting usually lasts 3 to 7 days and runs in 3 levels:
THE THREE TIERS ARE:
1. Church Level: The meeting begins with thanksgiving service. Focus is on prayers, moral teachings, marriage counseling, and fundraising for church projects.
2. Town/Community Level: All women of the town meet - those at home and those visiting from cities/abroad. This is where major community projects are planned: clinics, schools, markets, scholarships, and welfare programs.
3. Village/Kindred Level: The most local meeting. Women in each family gather in their husband’s compound. They settle family disputes, support widows and orphans, and handle local matters.
*TYPICAL ORDER OF EVENTS*
- Day 1: Arrival & Thanksgiving- Women arrive, go to church, and march through town to open the meeting.
- Day 2: Deliberations & Projects- Meetings, auditing of accounts, planning projects, and lectures on health, business, and parenting.
- Day 3: Resolution & Celebration - Resolutions are read, cultural dances performed, uniforms showcased, and the meeting ends with celebration.
* FEATURES AND RULES.
UNITY UNIFORM : Each year Women agree on one Ankara wrapper and headtie. This promotes equality and stops competition between rich and poor.
- CONTRIBUTIONS AND LEVIES: Women contribute money for community development. Attendance is expected, and some towns impose fines for absence.
HOMECOMING: It is also a time for marriages, funerals, title taking, and bringing city-born children back to learn culture.
THE IMPACT AND IMPORTANCE.
Today, August Meeting is more than a gathering. It is:
- A Development Engine the Women use and funded and built major infrastructure in their communities.
- A Peace and Conflict Tool use by Many families and Communities to settle dispute.
- A Platform for Women’s Voice It gives women direct power in decision-making and governance.
- Cultural Preservation: It keeps Igbo traditions, language, and values alive across generations and in the diaspora.
