You see astronauts in two colours; white and orange.
But why? is there a reason for this? if there is, what's it?

Astronauts wear their different suits for different purposes.
The orange suit is called the Advanced crew escape suit (ACES) it is worn by astronauts during takeoff and landing. They wear this suit during these periods as security measure in case of a problem so that when they exit the space craft they can be easily located and found by the rescue team. Orange is the most visible colour over the sky blue, sea green background of the Earth.

the white suit on the other hand is called the Extravehicular activity suit (EVAS). It is worn by the Astronauts when they're in space and outside their spacecraft. White colour makes sense in this situation because space is seen to appear dark, so the most visible colour over that landscape is white. another reason is because the astronauts are closer to the heat of the sun and white is the most suitable colour to reflect light and heat.

so... That's why they wear only Orange and White.

During WWII, American prisoners of war in Japan were living under unimaginable conditions and were not allowed to communicate with each other in any way.

Yet they found a way to communicate in a way that the guards couldn't pick on. With it they were consistent in their reports and kept morale high.

How did they do it?

The Tap Code.

The tap code is a form of communication using series of taps and pauses. You could do the tap anywhere. On walls, floors, your body even the recipient's body.

Here's how it works.

The English alphabet is arranged in a 5 by 5 grid with K being infused into C. Then any letter can be represented with two tap numbers and a pause inbetween.

For example, letter "B" would be. One tap followed by two taps (1,2). The first tap indicating the row and the second indicate the column.

In the tap code, the word "love" would be (3,1 3,4 5,1 1,5) or ( ••• • ••• •••• ••••• • • •••••) it's just number of taps and length of pause.

Because of how lengthy it would be to communicate sentences, they adopted very high level abbreviations where "goodnight" would be gn, "God bless you" — gbu.

They communicated this way used it to tell others many things... what questions they were asked during interrogations, who needed more support or food, what lies they're to maintain and orders to obey.

New inmates learnt in a couple of days and and they maintained communication until freedom came.

Laconic Wit

Laconia is a region in ancient Greece, known for their extremely courageous warriors and military excellence, now that sounds like how you'd describe Sparta instead, it is true because Sparta was a city in Laconia.

Apart from their military prowess, the Laconians were known for something else - Their cold, blunt, concise manner of speech.

Here are the most popular incidents of their wit: -

When King Philip, father of Alexander the great was conquering everything on his path, he reached to Laconia and asked them to surrender, they replied with a single word "No".

Then he wrote to them again asking: when I visit Laconia should I come as a friend or a foe? again they replied with one word: Neither!

King Philip being furious wrote a third letter saying "If I invade Laconia, you will be destroyed never to rise again" and the Laconians replied him with the word:
"If".

This blunt, cold, concise method of using words is known to us today as the Laconic wit or Laconic speech and it is duly named after Laconia.

The Placebo effect.

There is a treatment which is not a treatment which sometimes cures people of their infirmities. It is called the placebo effect. What it is? And how is it used?

Placebo is a dummy treatment given by doctors. Sometimes it is clean water, saline water, sugar pills or even a fake surgery to make the patient believe that they've received actual medication. Many times, this belief goes on to actually cure them.

Most times, placebos are used when the real treatment is unavailable or when the sickness is incurable but the doctor wants to give their patient hope.

It is also used to test the effectiveness of a new treatment. For example: when a new treatment is launched, some patients will be given the real treatment while some will be given a placebo. If the new treatment is not more successful by a big margin, then it is just another placebo and not a real treatment, even though it cured some people.

You've also probably gotten a placebo at least once.

There are many reports of placebos curing incurable sicknesses, but placebos are unethical. Especially when there's an already existing treatment.

Leaning tower of Pisa.

In Italy, in the city of Pisa, there is the leaning tower. Famous for its tilt that it attracts thousands of tourists every year. But why is it leaning? Was it intended?

The leaning tower of Pisa is an ancient building, built in 1173. While the construction of the tower was going on, the building began to sink on one side because of weak soil. Then the engineers abandoned the building for 99 years, continuing in 1272. This allowed the building to settle and stabilise I'm the soil, but it was still tilted.

By the end of construction, the angle of tilt was 1.7°. the Italian government was concerned about the building and didn't want it to fall. So, they tried many things. They dug around the tower to examine its foundation, they injected mortar to strengthen its base and they also tried to counter balance using weight.

All these failed and caused the building to lean even further, reaching an angle of 5.5°. prior to that, engineers had already predicted that the building will fall if it reaches 5.44°. it reached 5.5° and no one could tell why it was still standing.

But with advancement in engineering and aid of computers, engineers we're able to solve the problem in the 1970s. They could safely straighten it, but they didn't want to take away the tower's fame, so they allowed it to lean at only 3.99° and that's what we all see today

There are many stories of lost cities but that of Pompeii is of the most tragic ones till date. Where's Pompeii now? And what happened to it?

The city of Pompeii is located in Italy and today it is a tourist center. Tourists go there to witness an entire city which was destroyed nearly two thousand years ago. Its buildings just as it was, and its people mummified in their last moments.

It happened on the 24th of August in 79CE. An unusually quick volcano erupted from mount Vesuvius and destroyed the cities in close proximity. Pompeii was its closest neighbor.

On that day, the people of Pompeii were celebrating a festival in honour of Emperor Augustus and the day before was the festival in honour of the god of fire and volcano.

Due to these festivals, there were way more people on Pompeii that day than usual.

While they were feasting, a sudden volcano erupted from mount Vesuvius raining hot ashes and debris on Pompeii and carrying wind hot enough to boil body fluids and strip humans of flesh. It continued for hours, buried Pompeii under ash and captured its people in their last moments; preserving the fear in their faces just before they died.

In one day, an entire city was lost. Its culture and its people. 😥

What will happen if you suddenly appear at the top of mount Everest?

Climbing mountains isn't just about the endurance to climb or overcoming fear of heights. It's a lot more complex. In fact, if you decide to climb a mountain, you'll need to take a specialised training. This is necessary because strange things happen at high altitudes.

Firstly, any height above 8,000ft is already considered high altitude. At this height, there's lesser available oxygen so your body begins to struggle. Firstly, you begin to breathe faster, your heart starts racing, even your blood becomes thicker. You'll urinate more often, lose weight, and find it difficult to sleep.

All these are happening just at 8,000ft while the peak of mount Everest stands at 29,000ft. What happens there?

Just as we have learnt that available oxygen reduces as we go higher, at 29,000ft, there's less than 1/3 oxygen as there is at sea level. This region is called death zone and it is believed that humans cannot cope with it.

At that height, sleeping becomes unbelievably hard and digestion almost impossible. People begin to get sicknesses like high altitude pulmonary edema (HAPE) which can quickly lead to death.

There are cases of people doing strange things like removing their clothes, forgetting their camps, and seriously talking with nobody. This is because the brain is deprived of adequate oxygen. You should also know that it is extremely cold at that height (-11°C).

A trick that mountain climbers use is to camp at new heights so that their body adapts to the changes before they continue. This adaptation to height is called acclimatization. Death zone is seen to be too high for any human to acclimatize even after adapting to extreme heights below it.

Now, imaging just appearing at the peak of mount Everest. No telling what will happen to you, but you surely won't survive.

A short story of George Dantzig

While George Dantzig was pursuing a doctorate in mathematics at the university of California, one day in 1939, George came late to class and saw two questions on the board.

He wrote them down took them home and solved them thinking they were assignments. After some days, he submitted them to his professor and added that they were a little harder than usual.

His professor being excited and surprised told him that what he had solved were two of the most famous unsolved problems in statistics.

The solution was published and it earned Dantzig his PhD.

Red cross is about the most active and most impactful humanitarian organisation in the world today, but Red cross as big as it is today, was the small idea of one man. Who was he and how did Red cross come about?

His name is Henri Dunant and the year was 1859. Henri Dunant embarked on a business trip to meet Napoleon III in Solferino, Lombardi.

Henri Dunant arrived in the evening of June 18th 1859 and met a sight that changed history. There had been a war earlier that day and thousands of soldiers were littered on the battlefields in Solferino wounded, dying, and dead with no efforts to save struggling soldiers.

Dunant was shocked by what he saw so he mobilised women and children to help him take care of the wounded soldiers. He taught them to provide assistance to everyone irrespective of their side in the conflict.

Later, Henri Dunant returned to his country and wrote a book on his experience in the fields of Solferino. He named it: A memory of Solferino. In that book was the idea of Red Cross.

He wrote that a neutral organisation should exist to provide care to all victims of armed conflicts regardless of the victims affiliation.

This is how Red cross started. From the compassion of one man.

Black death of Childbed.

In the 18th century, there was a deadly disease that affected women shortly after they gave birth to a child. Within the first 3 days of childbirth, women would begin to suffer from fever and severe abdominal pains. In most cases, this led to the death of the mother.

The disease was dominant in Europe; It was so deadly that in some areas about 80% of women who went in for childbirth died shortly after.

It spread throughout Europe and in some corners of North America until a saviour came. His name is Dr. Ignaz Semmelweis, he was a Hungarian physician.

In 1847, Dr. Semmelweis asked doctors to wash their hands before entering the maternity ward, he blamed doctors to be the cause.

They laughed at his suggestion but in 1884, one hospital which took his suggestion seriously recorded that the mortality rate of mothers in their hospital dropped from 98.4% to 12.7%. since then, hospital hygiene has been taken seriously like never before.

The disease is called puerperal fever and it is caused by an infection of the uterus during childbirth or abortions.

It was Dr. Semmelweis who first thought that washing hands could save lives. He was nicknamed "saviour of mothers".
